About us

Innovation UBC works with UBC’s researchers to support and accelerate the translation of their research into real world impacts. Through research partnerships, technology transfer, and venture building services, UBC researchers have access to a robust ecosystem of services and support to strengthen their translation opportunities. Our successful history of translation and commercialization has led to the creation of 284 spin-off companies, establishing over 500 active licensing agreements, and enabling thousands of research partnerships each year with industry, government, and non-profit organizations. We support $190M+ annually in sponsored research activities (which is more than 80% of provincial sponsored research funding). UBC licensed technologies have attracted over $8.4 billion in investment capital and generated over $13 billion in revenues. 91% of UBC spin-off companies remain in Canada, 88% in BC.

Front Row Ventures is excited to announce our investment in Tydra Labs ♻️ Founded by Jaiya Varshney and Dr. Athanasios Kritharis, ph.d., Tydra Labs is transforming crustacean waste into ultra-pure chitin, a sustainable biomaterial used in coatings, agriculture, and packaging. Their proprietary fermentation process costs 30-60% less than conventional chemical extraction, produces a purer, allergen-free end product, and unlocks value from waste streams the industry has long overlooked. Backed by scientific advisors from MIT and Harvard, the team has secured $550K in non-dilutive funding, closed their pre-seed, and won the $100K Women in Tech Investment Prize at Startupfest 2025. We're proud to support Tydra Labs as they build a cleaner, more efficient future for biomaterials! 🚀 Building something big? Let's talk. • So proud to have watched this one unfold live! 🏆 Congratulations to the team at CURA on winning the #WebSummitVancouver 2026 PITCH Competition — and a special shoutout to co-founder Sabrina Scott for an incredible performance on Centre Stage! 🌱 CURA is a UBC spin-off working to decarbonize cement production — tackling one of the world's toughest abatement challenges. With technology designed to retrofit directly into existing cement and lime plants, the impacts of CURA's work are set to stretch far beyond construction, into steelmaking, agriculture, carbon removal, and more. There were many of us from the Innovation UBC community in the audience and getting to cheer the team on in person made it that much sweeter! We can't wait to see where CURA goes next. #PITCH

We are pleased to announce that SenseNet has been recognized as one of Canada's leading AI companies, a milestone that reflects years of work by our team, partners, and customers in building the world's most comprehensive wildfire intelligence network. The Government of Canada announced yesterday at Web Summit Vancouver that SenseNet has been awarded federal support through the AI Compute Access Fund for a multi-million dollar project to help protect the planet. The announcement was made by the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence. This recognition and support will help us continue scaling SenseNet's AI wildfire intelligence platform, combining sensors, cameras, satellite data, and advanced AI to detect wildfires earlier and support faster response. We were also honoured to be featured alongside Canada's Minister of Artificial Intelligence, Evan Solomon, during the press conference at Web Summit Vancouver. Wildfires are becoming one of the biggest climate and public safety challenges of our time. At SenseNet, we will continue our momentum in building AI technology that protects communities, critical infrastructure, and the environment, while making a global impact. #AI #WildfireDetection #ClimateTech #CanadianInnovation #WebSummitVancouver #SenseNet

NorthX is doubling down on industrial decarbonization in Canada 🇨🇦 In its latest move, NorthX Climate Tech is deploying $3 million in non-dilutive funding to support four companies pushing “cutting-edge” clean technologies—from hydrogen production to carbon removal and methane reduction. The funding backs ShiftX Technologies Ltd., Kinitics Automation, Hydron Energy Inc, and Calgary-based CURA—each targeting high-emitting sectors like energy, heavy industry, and resource systems. As Canada looks to strengthen both its industrial competitiveness and climate leadership, this is exactly the kind of early-stage capital that helps move technologies from pilot to scale. #ClimateTech #CleanTech #Vancouver #BCtech #EnergyTransition #Innovation https://lnkd.in/gcY2CS5F

Big win for Calgary at Web Summit Vancouver. CURA has been named the winner of the Web Summit Vancouver 2026 PITCH competition, taking top honours in one of the global conference’s marquee startup showcases. The Calgary climatetech company is developing electrochemical technology to reduce CO₂ emissions from cement production, with its CURALYTE-powered electrolyzer designed to split limestone into lime and pure CO₂ for storage or use. CURA’s win puts an Alberta-born hardtech solution in front of a global audience of investors, founders, and industry leaders — and adds another proof point for Calgary’s growing strength in climate technology and industrial innovation.
