Simon Fraser University is putting new capital behind B.C.’s next generation of research-driven startups. Announced at Web Summit Vancouver, the new SFU Innovates Venture Fund will support early-stage ventures emerging from SFU researchers, students, and alumni. Created with InBC Investment Corp., the fund starts with $15 million in investment capital, with SFU committing $7.5 million and InBC matching that amount. SFU is also seeking additional investment and philanthropic support to grow the fund to $20 million. The fund will focus on sectors including life sciences, deep technology, and cleantech, helping more SFU-born companies move from lab to market and scale in British Columbia. Announcing the SFU Innovates Venture Fund 📢 Today, Simon Fraser University and InBC announced plans to launch the SFU Innovates Venture Fund, a co-investment partnership and joint venture to grow and commercialize university breakthrough research and discoveries. The announcement was made at Web Summit Vancouver, with attendance by the Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Honourable Ravi Kahlon and members of the media. SFU spinoff and InBC-invested company Photonic Inc. also provided validating remarks. The SFU Innovates Venture Fund will invest in innovative B.C. companies based on technology developed by SFU researchers, students and alumni. SFU is Canada’s top university for innovation, with a proven track record of discovery and entrepreneurship. The joint venture builds on this legacy, accelerating the transition of university innovation into B.C. businesses. This co-investing partnership represents a shared commitment by InBC and SFU to increase the commercialization capacity in the province.
