Last week, our Interim President and CEO, CFO and VP of Entrepreneurship & Commercialization, Tony Brooks, joined a panel at Web Summit Vancouver to discuss investing in agritech innovation and the challenges of scaling emerging companies. During the panel, “Agritech Investing: Risk, returns and repeatable growth,” Tony shared how Genome BC’s Industry Innovation (I²) Fund helps BC-based companies overcome the final hurdle of commercialization by providing debt financing to companies nearing market readiness. As returns are repaid, the fund reinvests into the next generation of innovators, creating a cycle of continued growth and support. The discussion also explored why investors are increasingly backing technologies that can strengthen supply chains and address climate-related challenges while delivering economic and social value. Tony shared perspectives on alternative protein technologies, investment risk and the common mistakes founders make when trying to scale their businesses. One key takeaway: successful companies are often led by teams that stay open-minded, adaptable and willing to listen. It was a great opportunity to contribute to global conversations on innovation, investment and the future of agritech. #WebSummitVancouver #WebSummitVancouver2026

It's great to see Canada's Immuno-Engineering and Biomanufacturing Hub being recognized at the Web Summit in Vancouver.
Canada’s Immuno-Engineering and Biomanufacturing Hub (CIEBH) was pleased to participate in Web Summit Vancouver this week alongside global leaders in health innovation, technology and entrepreneurship, with strong representation from the life sciences sector spanning health tech, immuno-engineering, biomanufacturing and advanced therapeutics. Dr. Michelle Wong, Executive Director of CIEBH, attended the summit on behalf of the Hub to explore opportunities for cross-sector collaboration and innovation across academia, health systems and industry. We also congratulate Dr. Lori Brotto and the eSense team on being named a Top 10 finalist in the Web Summit PITCH competition, as well as CURA, a UBC spin-off company that advanced to the Top 3 – exciting recognitions for world-leading early-stage startups! Earlier in the summit, attendees also visited several UBC research sites as part of the UBC Tech Advantage Tours, including labs led by CIEBH principal investigators Dr. Pieter Cullis and Dr. Sriram Subramaniam. Thank you to all the organizers for this fantastic event! #HealthInnovation #LifeSciences #WebSummit Innovate BC Life Sciences BC Genome British Columbia Innovation UBC Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia Government of British Columbia The University of British Columbia

🌱 International Day of Plant Health 🌱 Healthy plants are the foundation of healthy ecosystems, food systems and economies — and genomics is helping protect them. 🧬 Genomics can help detect plant diseases earlier, track invasive species and support the development of more resilient crops and forests. 🌲 In British Columbia, this research plays an important role in protecting forests, strengthening food security and supporting sustainable agriculture in a changing climate. Because healthier plants mean a healthier planet. #InternationalDayOfPlantHealth #Genomics #PlantHealth #Biodiversity

During Canadian Mental Health Week, new research out of British Columbia is helping shape conversations around the future of mental health care. 🧠 A newly published paper in the Journal of Affective Disorders explores diverse public perspectives on pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing for major depressive disorder and how it could be implemented within BC’s healthcare system. The study, funded by Genome BC, gathered input from members of the public across all five regional health authorities in BC, highlighting support for publicly available PGx testing alongside strong recommendations around healthcare provider education, equity and access and genetic data privacy protections. As genomics continues to shape the future of healthcare, engaging the public in these conversations remains essential. 📖 Read the publication: https://lnkd.in/g8uxF4fB Stirling Bryan Jehannine (J9) Austin Provincial Health Services Authority Government of British Columbia #MentalHealthWeek #MentalHealth #Genomics #PrecisionMedicine #Pharmacogenomics
