About us

British Columbia is the westernmost province of Canada, with a population of more than four million people. It is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. British Columbia is also a component of the Pacific Northwest and the Cascadia bioregion, along with the U.S. states of Alaska, Idaho, western Montana, Oregon, and Washington state. In 1866, Vancouver Island became part of the colony of British Columbia, and Victoria became the united colony's capital. In 1871, British Columbia became the sixth province of Canada. Its Latin motto is Splendor sine occasu ("Splendour without Diminishment"). British Columbia's elected leaders and public servants are here to serve the citizens of B.C. and they're held accountable for their actions and decisions that impact residents. Learn about the different government bodies, the people that staff them and the work that they do. The Government of B.C. is made up of ministries, agencies and Crown corporations. • This Family Doctor Day, we’re celebrating the doctors who care for people and communities across British Columbia — and the physicians choosing to make their home here. Meet Dr. Hoverman, a family doctor who relocated from the US to BC to continue providing patient-centred care. Hundreds of health-care professionals, including doctors, have been recruited, helping connect more people to primary care in communities throughout the province. Doctors are choosing BC for the opportunity to practise team-based care, build long-term relationships with patients, and enjoy a high quality of life. Know someone interested in building a career in BC? Send them to BCHealthCareers.ca

  • BC is leading the way as asking rents continue to fall across Canada. With faster zoning processes, better incentives for builders, and more housing projects being built, renters are seeing a real difference. These steps are helping unlock more purpose‑built rental housing and ease a market that’s been tight for years. What we’re doing is working, and we’re committed to keeping that momentum going so more people across BC can find a home that works for them.

    • Headline reads: Vancouver just had the largest rent decline in Canada
Article from: Daily Hive on May 7, 2026
  • Women’s health is getting more attention and better support in BC. At a recent women’s health roundtable at the BC Legislature, obstetrician-gynecologist and author Dr. Jen Gunter shared her perspective after recently moving back here from the US. She spoke about the importance of protecting access to care and addressing misinformation, especially as women’s health faces growing challenges elsewhere. In BC, more women and gender-diverse people are getting the care they need through expanded services and broader coverage. BC is the first province in Canada to: • offer a self-screening option for cervical cancer • provide free prescription birth control The Province has also: • expanded pharmacists' scope of practice so they can prescribe contraception, reducing barriers for timely reproductive care • launched a publicly funded in-vitro fertilization program • expanded access to menopausal hormone therapy at no cost for hundreds of thousands of people in BC • and opened the Complex Menopause Clinic, the first of its kind in Western Canada at BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre This work supports choice, autonomy and better health outcomes across BC.

    • An image of text that says "I'm really excited to be coming back home and to do what I can to help within the healthcare system. It's really exciting to see BC shining a light on reproductive healthcare and showing that it can be done and it can be be done well." This quote is said by Dr. Jen Gunter, a formerly US-based gynecologist and author of The Menopause Manifesto, who has since relocated to BC.
  • Did you know? BC is expecting over 1 million job openings in the next decade. Major projects are already moving ahead in construction, clean energy, critical minerals, marine, and transportation - creating tens of thousands of jobs across the province. To meet the demand, BC is expanding skilled trades training - so people here are first in line for good, local jobs. The plan includes: - Up to 5,000 new trades training seats in 2026/27 - Cutting waitlists for in-demand programs - More training in rural and remote communities - More programs to keep pace with industry needs - from construction to clean energy and transportation. If you want in: grants, apprenticeships, and training programs can help you get ready, whether you’re starting out or switching careers. Learn more at SkilledTradesBC.ca

  • Nearly 900 new child care spaces have opened in 17 communities across BC so far this year, with another 12,000 in development. To keep adding more, provincial funding is now available to help school districts create child care on school grounds where suitable space is already available. This funding supports renovations and repurposing of underused or surplus space, without impacting classrooms or learning environments. By making better use of existing space, child care can be created faster and more efficiently than building new facilities, helping more families access affordable, high-quality child care close to home. • Emergency Alerts help keep people safe by delivering urgent, life‑saving information during emergencies like wildfires, floods and earthquakes. BC's emergency alert system is tested twice a year to help people recognize alerts and know what to expect in a real emergency. These tests also help ensure the system is working properly when it matters most.
