My 9 biggest takeaways from Robert Koviak (who sold $1.2B in software with a 90%+ win rate for Salesforce, Microsoft and ServiceNow): 1. If you can't measure it, you don't have a deal - "I don't sell anything. I help people invest in future outcomes." Bob keeps technology out of the conversation. Every deal starts with the business metric the customer will use to justify the investment. No metric = no deal. 2. Write the customer's business case for them - "Give me your PowerPoint template. I'll draft the business case for you on why this makes sense." Most reps wait for the customer to build internal justification. Bob builds it himself and removes every ounce of friction from the buying process. 3. Your real KPI is getting customers promoted - Bob's champion at UnitedHealthcare became Chief Automation Officer. His contact at Allstate retired as CIO — then flew Bob to Scotland for a week of golf to thank him for the impact on his career. "If your customers' careers are flourishing, you're gonna be the most referenceable salesperson in the history of the world." 4. Align to something massive and measurable - At UiPath, Bob helped the world's largest HMO solve insurance claims adjudication. They paid under $10M. The board announced it would save $2.1B per year. "We didn't know what to charge because we were new to the market." He should have charged $200M. 5. FedEx bold claims to the entire C-suite on the same day - When nobody knew UiPath, Bob created a glossy document with a big fat claim — "we can save you $50M" — and FedExed it with a handwritten letter to every executive on the leadership team. Next staff meeting: "He sent that to you too? Who's meeting with him?" 6. No change agent = no deal - "There's always a change agent. Somebody that wants to break some glass, make a name for themselves." A true champion has influence, power, and will sell for you when you're not in the room. If they won't give you access to their executives, there's generally not a deal to be had. 7. You're the CEO of your territory - "Where you spend your time is almost like investing in strategic stocks. Each account is gonna churn out some level of return." If a customer can't get to a decision in the timeline you get paid, shift your priorities. Cherish your time. Stop accepting lousy deals. 8. Tell your CEO to call their CIO - Bob got an RFP on Monday, due Tuesday. Submitted 100 pages overnight. Got a flat no — "We don't view you as a player." They were the market leader. He called his CEO and said Target doesn't think we're a player. You need to call their CIO. 90 days later: $2.5M/year deal. 9. The joint success plan doesn't end at the contract - "It ends at their success criteria." Bob maps out deployment roadmaps, implementation timelines, and month-three milestones. One skill separates great communicators from average ones: Perspective-taking. The ability to see things from someone else’s point of view. But most people do it wrong. Here’s how to do it right, especially when you’re leading or being led: When you’re the boss, persuading down: You’re trying to convince Maria on your team to do something different. She’s pushing back. Your instinct might be to assert your authority. But that’s a mistake. Here’s why… Research shows: The more powerful you feel, the worse your perspective-taking becomes. More power = less understanding. So if you want to persuade Maria, don’t lean into your title. Do the opposite: dial your power down, just briefly. Try this: Before the next conversation, remind yourself: Maria has power too. I need her buy-in. Maybe she sees something I don’t. Lower your feelings of power to raise your perspective. From that place, ask: → What does she see that I’m missing? → What might be in her way? → What’s a win-win outcome? That shift changes the entire dynamic. Instead of steamrolling, you’re collaborating. And that’s how you earn trust and results. Now flip it. You’re the employee persuading your boss. It’s a high-stakes moment. You’re nervous. So do you appeal to emotion? No. Drop the feelings. Focus on interests. Here’s the key question: “What’s in it for them?” Not how you feel. Not your big dream. → Will it save time? → Improve performance? → Help them hit their goals? Make it about their world, not yours. Why? Because every boss has a mental shortcut: → Does this employee make my life easier or harder? Be the person who brings clarity, ideas, and upside. Not complaints, drama, or friction. In summary: → Persuading down? Dial down your power to see clearer. → Persuading up? Focus on their interests, not your emotions. Perspective-taking is a superpower, if you learn how to use it. My team and I get pitched 5–10 new businesses every week. Mostly from entrepreneurs trying to raise money. If you want your message or pitch to stand out to investors, do this: 1. Start with the problem, not the product. If I don’t feel the pain, I won’t value the solution. 2. Be brutally clear. My team should understand your business in 10 seconds or less. 3. Show traction, not just vision. Even if it's small, show me that the market wants it and you know how to deliver. 4. Tell me why you’re the one. I’m investing in you as much as the idea. Show conviction, not just ambition. 5. Make it a conversation, not a monologue. Curiosity builds trust. Ask good questions and make it collaborative. Keep it simple.

Sales Leaders please remember this. Data doesn’t tell you what’s wrong. It just tells you where you need to look. It is still surprising to me how non data driven a lot of sales managers. VPs and CROs are But even with the ones that are they tend to stop too short. Ok close rates are low? Why? Now we need to go see where in the cycle the are getting kicked out. Ok most aren’t making past POC. Ok now we need ti go review the POC process. Listen to those calls. Review those emails. NOW we are getting closer to the cause. Show rates are bad? Ok we need to go review how far our they are being booked, what the calls sound like, what lie confirmation process is, etc If data told the whole story we wouldn’t be needed as leaders. Data tells you where to look. We bring the context from what we find there. Dig deep this next quarter. Pick ONE MAJOR METRIC and diagnose the living you know what out of it.
