    I once sat next to a rep making $750K a year. He wasn’t friendly. He didn’t build rapport. He wasn’t even likeable. Yet he closed deals most “charismatic” sellers could only dream of. His secret? He only asked Quantifiable Questions. Here’s the exact sequence of questions he used: 👉 START WITH TIME  “How long does it take you to [calculate commissions each quarter?]”  Buyer: “About 30 hours.” 👉 STACK THE COSTS Time cost → “So that’s ~4 full workdays. What’s your time worth? Or better, what could you have done with that time instead?” (Unlocks bigger, business initiatives they didn’t get to.) Error cost → “How often do mistakes happen? Have you ever overpaid? By how much?” Buyer: “Yeah, we overpaid one rep $20K last year. Underpaid another one.” Ripple effect → This is where it gets heavy. “What happens when reps don’t trust their comp?” Buyer: “They re-run the numbers themselves. Probably another $5K in wasted time per quarter. Per rep.” Don’t stop here though. There’s more quantifiable pain to find. Push further: “How distracted do they get? Ever had someone leave over comp errors?” Buyer: “Yes.” Rep: “What’s your hiring cycle cost? Recruiters? Ramp time? Buyer: 20K agency fee + 200K ramp quota while the seat remains open. 👉 MAKE THE MATH UNDENIABLE  “30 hours + $20K in errors + $5K in lost productivity + 20K agency fee + 200K missing ramp. That’s $240K a year tied to comp. Do I have that right?” At that point, the buyer isn’t looking at a “spreadsheet headache.” They’re staring at a $240K business problem. — Small talk won’t win you deals. Neither will charisma. Feelings don’t get funded. Math does.

    Most teams are just wasting their time watching session replays. Why? Because not all session replays are equally valuable, and many don’t uncover the real insights you need. After 15 years of experience, here’s how to find insights that can transform your product: — 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮: Too many teams pick random sessions, watch them from start to finish, and hope for meaningful insights. It’s like searching for a needle in a haystack. The fix? Start with trigger moments — specific user behaviors that reveal critical insights. ➔ The last session before a user churns. ➔ The journey that ended in a support ticket. ➔ The user who refreshed the page multiple times in frustration. Select five sessions with these triggers using powerful tools like @LogRocket.     If I can’t find the bug in 5 minutes, I stop debugging. And this is a rule almost every senior DevOps engineer quietly follows. Because after years in production, you learn something uncomfortable: Most outages are not bugs. They’re side-effects of the system design. So when the timer hits ~5 minutes and nothing obvious shows up, I change modes. And instead of staring at logs, I move through three layers. 01) Symptom thinking (first 5 minutes) What’s actually broken? Pod crash? Latency spike? Deployment failing? Node pressure? Basic checks: - kubectl get pods - kubectl describe - kubectl logs - events timeline Many problems die here. If they don’t… 02) Resource thinking (now I stop looking for errors and start looking for pressure.) Questions I ask: Is CPU throttling? Memory limits misconfigured? Disk I/O saturation? Network queue building up? Commands usually reveal the truth fast: - kubectl top pods - kubectl top nodes - kubectl describe node - metrics dashboards A surprising number of “mystery bugs” are just resource starvation. But if resources look normal… 03) Architecture thinking (this is where seniors solve problems juniors keep patching.) I stop asking: “Why did this pod fail?” And start asking: Why can this failure take down the service at all? Why is retry logic missing? Why does one dependency control the entire path? Why does staging behave differently from prod? Because the real fix is rarely: “Restart the pod.” It’s usually: - remove single points of failure - isolate blast radius - add observability - automate guardrails This is the shift most engineers never make. Juniors debug incidents. Seniors debug systems. And once you see production that way, outages stop looking like random chaos. They start looking like predictable architecture mistakes. That’s when DevOps stops being firefighting. And becomes system design.

    While it can be easily believed that customers are the ultimate experts about their own needs, there are ways to gain insights and knowledge that customers may not be aware of or able to articulate directly. While customers are the ultimate source of truth about their needs, product managers can complement this knowledge by employing a combination of research, data analysis, and empathetic understanding to gain a more comprehensive understanding of customer needs and expectations. The goal is not to know more than customers but to use various tools and methods to gain insights that can lead to building better products and delivering exceptional user experiences. ➡️ User Research: Conducting thorough user research, such as interviews, surveys, and observational studies, can reveal underlying needs and pain points that customers may not have fully recognized or articulated.     Mastering the technique of managing non-conforming products on the shop floor is crucial to reducing trade returns/recalls. There will be non-conforming products (products that do not meet set specifications in terms of food safety or quality) from time to time. That is why quality control is done even at the last stage of the manufacturing process, that is, at the finished goods evacuation point. As a newbie QAQC how can you ensure that defective products do not get to the market? 👍🏼First, Know Your Product (KYP). If you do not know your product thoroughly, how will you identify when there is a deviation from acceptable standard? Take a few samples of the product and observe. From the raw materials, to the intermediate product (blend), to the finished products. Observe the packaging material and how sealing is achieved horizontally and vertically. 👍🏼 Carry out routine checks. It's in the process of carrying out routine checks that nonconformities are identified. If you don't check, you will assume that all is going well. Assumption is an enemy to product quality. 👍🏼 Segregation. Once non-conforming products are identified, quickly isolate them from good quality products to prevent mixup using visual tags, stickers or tapes. Identify the machine responsible for the defective products and alert the operator for immediate action. Carry out traceability to identify any defective products that may have escaped and make sure to recover all back to the isolation point on the shop floor. 👍🏼 Document the defect in detail. Include information such as the nature of the defect, batch number, date, time and any relevant info including pictures. 👍🏼 Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to understand why the non-conformity occurred. If it is a machine related issue, engage the operator/technician to provide more insight and how it can be addressed going forward. Use tools like the 5 Whys or Fishbone Diagram. 👍🏼Non-Conforming Product Management. Follow the SOP for managing non-conforming product for appropriate action on whether to recover, rework, use for other purposes, or dispose. Seek clarification when in doubt. 👍🏼Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA). Ensure that the current non-conformity is resolved before operations continue. For example, if a non-conformity is caused by a machine, ensure that engineering intervention is done and assess product quality before the machine is back on stream. Also, develop and implement preventive measures to avoid recurrence of same issue. 👍🏼 Verify that your CAPA is being implemented and monitor the process closely and document the action(s) taken and results. 👍🏼 Training and Communication. Quality control is not a one-man job. Do well to communicate the issues detected with other team members and train the operators on how to carry out self checks on the products as well.     When Parts Fail, Smart Design Steps In ➖ A Practical Approach 🔹 Imagine your medical device breaking every few weeks. Frustrating, right? One of my clients was facing exactly that: the holders for treatment handles in his device kept cracking after just a few weeks of use. The manufacturer sent replacements, but they broke too. Each failure meant sending a technician, increasing costs, and frustrating customers. “We can’t keep doing this,” he told me. When he reached out to me, he needed a real fix ➖ fast. How I Approached It: ✅ Understand the root cause ➖ Instead of just replicating the old design, I analyzed why the holders were failing. Weak points, material choice, and real-world stress all played a role. ✅ Go back to basics ➖ No complex simulations or high ➖ tech 3D scanners at first just a pencil ✏️ , paper 🗒️ , rulers 📏 , and a caliper. A hands-on approach helped me quickly redesign the part for better durability. ✅ Test and refine➖ The first 3D-printed model wasn’t perfect. But instead of overengineering, I made precise adjustments and tested again. The final version fit perfectly and solved the cracking issue. Now, my client is producing these improved holders to replace the broken ones before they fail ➖ saving both time and money.     You’re in an interview. The interviewer says: “Our microservice is down in production. Where do you start?” This question isn’t about tools or frameworks. It’s about whether you have a repeatable mental model for debugging systems under pressure. Here’s how a strong backend engineer answers — step by step. Step 1: Define the blast radius before touching anything You ask : Is one endpoint failing or the whole service? Is it affecting all users or a subset? One region or all regions? Did this start suddenly or gradually? This tells you whether you’re dealing with: a local bug a bad deployment a config issue or a cascading system failure You don’t debug until you know how big the fire is. Step 2: Look at metrics before logs Metrics answer what is broken much faster than logs. You check: error rate (4xx vs 5xx) latency (p95, p99) CPU and memory usage GC pressure thread / goroutine count connection pool usage At this stage, you’re not fixing anything. You’re narrowing the problem from “everything is broken” to one likely cause. Step 3: Trace a single request end-to-end Now you move to logs, but with intent. You pick one failing request and follow it using: request IDs trace IDs correlation IDs You trace its path: Client → API → Service → Dependency → Response This tells you: where time is being spent where failures are introduced whether the error is internal or downstream If your logs don’t support this kind of tracing, that’s already a design problem. Step 4: Assume the bug is in a dependency, not your code Most microservice failures are not logic bugs. They come from: slow or locked databases cache misses or cache outages downstream service timeouts message queue backlogs network issues rate limits being hit At scale, your service often fails because something it depends on is misbehaving. This mindset alone saves hours of debugging time. Step 5: Ask the most important debugging question — “What changed?” Production systems rarely break randomly. You check: recent deployments config changes feature flags traffic spikes schema migrations infrastructure changes If something changed recently, that’s your primary suspect until proven otherwise. Step 6: Validate with controlled experiments Now you test your hypothesis carefully. You might: scale replicas up or down disable a feature flag route traffic away from a dependency replay requests add temporary safeguards You change one variable and observe the system’s response. When reality matches your expectation, you’ve found the root cause.

    One of the best things I did as a product leader at Depop was make every team stick their customer journey map on the wall where they sat. It took a little encouragement at first. But soon the walls were overflowing with customer quotes, pain points, prototypes and mental models. You didn't need to ask how a team thought about a problem. You could walk over and see for yourself. Stakeholders couldn't make feature suggestions without the full context staring them in the face. Everyone was more aligned. As with other product artefacts, not all CJMs are created equally, so here's a brief guide to making a GREAT one: 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗣 A CJM breaks the user journey into steps, then captures what happens at each one: • What they see • What they touch • How it makes them feel Touchpoints are every interaction: app screens, emails, support calls, physical product, sales conversations. Not just the app. Look at it from the customer's POV. Thoughts and emotions are the consequence of the touch points. Look for areas of delight to double down on, and frustration to ease. 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗 𝗢𝗡𝗘 1. Pick a persona. One user type, one goal. Start narrow. 2. Break the journey into steps from the customer's point of view, not yours. 3. Add touchpoints. Include everything: digital, physical, human. 4. Add thoughts and feelings. What do they like? Where do they get stuck? 5. Enrich with data. Quant, customer quotes, feature ideas. 6. Identify where to act. Fix the abandonment cliffs and you polish delight moments. You can do a rough draft on your own in 1-2 hours. But you get much richer insights and alignment by building this in a cross-functional workshop. 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗢𝗡 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗦 • "Once and done". You run the workshop, create the artefact and then never use it. • Detached from reality. You document what you think, not what your customers' think. • Product focus. You map the screens, not the holistic flow from the customer POV. • Qualitative only. You don't include hard metrics that help you size problems.
