Tools like code coverage analysis can help identify areas where additional testing is needed. 📌 Code Reviews for Tests: Just like code changes, tests should undergo thorough code reviews to ensure their quality and effectiveness. This helps catch any issues or oversights in the testing logic before they are integrated into the codebase. 📌 Parameterized and Data-Driven Tests: Incorporate parameterized and data-driven testing techniques to increase the versatility and comprehensiveness of your tests. When you're launching something new, you want to be sure it's going to work. Running in-market experiments prior to launch confirms hypotheses before you commit resources. Just as important, experiments can often prevent big missteps. Here are four rules of thumb that make for powerful experimentation: 1. Test more than one concept or proposition with more than one target market segment. Sure, you can test just one concept with just one target, but you'll only learn if it succeeded or failed. If you test several concepts in parallel with more than one target, you can compare performance by audience and start to understand the drivers of success across concepts. 2. Make sure that tested concepts are distinct and differentiated. Each concept should be unique because the goal is to learn as much as possible. If you only test three shades of blue, you'll never learn that people actually want red. 3. Test more than once. As you see 'hot spots' form between concept and audience, test variations of your winning concept. Let’s say, for example, that you test three distinct versions of your new product concept—let’s call them Red, Yellow, and Blue. In the first experiment, Red tests well with all three of your target audience segments. In the next experiment, test three versions of Red with all three segments. This next experiment might explore value propositions or particular features or positioning. It’s a way to generate additional learning about strategy: →What problem does Red solve for customers? →Which features drive interest in Red? →Which positioning helps to interest people in Red? 4. Be aware of your testing environment and how it creates bias (or not) for your experiment. I prefer real-life in-market experiments, with just enough exposure to generate statistically valid results; others prefer ‘lab-based’ testing. Either way, think about how representative your environment is of your eventual launch. INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: think like an entrepreneur ——— Netflix co-founder Marc Randolph tells a great true story about meeting a college student who wanted to build a peer-to-peer clothing sharing platform. She was ready to drop out of school and raise money to hire a development team. He stopped her and asked if she had paper, a marker, and tape. He told her to write "Would you like to borrow my clothes? Knock." on the paper and tape it to her dorm room door. Wait 24 hours and see if anyone knocks. Because if nobody knocks, she just learned something critical about her core assumption without burning any runway. Ideas are worthless until they’re proven in reality. This applies directly to product development. Think users want a metal finish? Mock it with painted plastic and watch their response. Believe your product needs voice control? Add a $15 USB mic before spec'ing custom hardware. Convinced your IoT feature is essential? Disable connectivity for a week and see if anyone notices. The fear is that crude tests will make you look unprofessional or waste time on "throwaway work." But what actually wastes time is spending eighteen months perfecting something nobody wants. Good V&V testing is boring V&V testing! At least that’s what I’ve found in many development projects for new medical devices. In other words, if the product team wants formal V&V testing to go smoothly (to be boring with no exciting surprises), they need to spend a lot of time on the informal testing preceding it (AKA pre-DVT, engineering testing, characterization testing, etc.). Thinking about product testing in the broad categories of informal versus formal, each with its own goals and methods, will help the team be both more efficient and avoid some of the biggest problems in V&V testing. Here are the key differences between the two categories of testing: ➡️ Informal testing: -Goals: learn about the product, discover and correct design flaws, develop new test methods and test tools -Includes broad, open-ended test methods -Lots of test failures means lots of learning and improvement (beyond “meeting the spec”) ➡️ Formal testing: -Goals: demonstrate to others that the product design is sound -Testing performed per detailed test methods and test protocols under change control -Devices built under controlled conditions -Expect to pass all of the tests (you should already know the answers before beginning); test failures mean big, expensive delays in the project Treating formal V&V as a way to discover the defects in a new medical device is a very expensive approach to completing the product design. Instead, product teams should maximize the effort put into informal testing to flush out defects as early as possible in development. Then completing formal V&V becomes predictable and efficient. Informal testing should be part of each project’s design and development planning to ensure that sufficient time and resources are provided to these crucial activities (don't wait until the “V&V Phase” of the project). Early product validation is everything. 5 years of designing in-house products has proved this to me a hundred times over. It seems obvious. Yet it’s something I see entrepreneurs struggle with all the time. We get hyped for business plans, innovation, big ideas. Don’t get me wrong—I love that stuff too. But that’s not what brings in revenue and keeps the lights on. Great product does that. And how do you know if your product is great? You test it. You test it early and often. You test it at every single stage of development to make sure you’re on the right track. You make sure it’s something people actually want. This is why I always do keyword research first. Do I see people searching to solve a specific problem? There’s my starting point. Once the idea is validated, then it’s all about execution. Design, test, tweak, repeat. For example, at my DTC cat brand we always give tester products to local cat cafes to test usability and durability. When 20+ cats are using a product for two weeks straight, we find out pretty quickly what needs improvement 😹. We also find people in our target customer demographic and see if they’d like to test the product for free. We gather their honest feedback, adjust the product accordingly, and repeat. Ultimately, if you don’t see initial signs of traction, you need to go back to the drawing board before moving forward. My number one rule: always make sure there’s demand for the product first. My number two rule: test the product relentlessly. It hasn’t led me astray yet.
