What are nearly 100 people doing in the middle of Manchester on May Bank Holiday to be helped over a loch by Urban Splash founder Tom Bloxham? Answer, closing in on Capital&Centric Kampus, having completed the third CyanLines guided walk, led by the walking guidebook that is Jonathan Schofield CL2 as its known tells you everything you need to know about why Manchester, Salford, and Trafford are breaking new ground. They are slowly returning the streets, squares and surface car parks to people and nature. The ‘origin point’ Mayfield Manchester by Duncan Paybody Studio Egret West Martyn Evans Hon FRIBA Landsec is the gift that keeps on giving. Navigating the back streets to Urban Splash New Islington, the first real green and blue modern district at scale. To Ancoats Green where Shelagh McNerney Manchester City Council Planit have followed those leads to make a new park from an old one, creating play and meadows at the intersection between the outer edge communities and the middle. Off via Cutting Room Square Camlins still buzzing after nearly two decades. Team CyanLines thank you yet again for making this happen 🙏🏻 Steve Connor Carragh Godolphin-Teague Clare Dentith DipM Lisa Ashurst Tom Bloxham Jessica Bowles Sofia Raseta

Last weekend around 90 of us had a brilliant afternoon exploring CL2 – the Mayfield, New Islington and Ancoats loop. We were greeted by our interim project director Steve Connor at the lovely community garden Station Sanctuary (a collaboration between Network Rail, National Trust, Sow the City, and MASH (Manchester Action on Street Health) located just outside Piccadilly Station, Jonathan Schofield led us past London Road Fire Station on to into Mayfield Manchester Park. Delivered by our partners Landsec together with the rest of the Mayfield Partnership (Manchester City Council, Transport for Greater Manchester and LCR Property) the 6.5 acre public park is now thoroughly established and was super busy with families enjoying the sunshine and the six slides in the play space! After Mayfield we made our way into New Islington stopping at the Chips building to learn more about the history of the Ashton Canal and the new canal arms Urban Splash created as part of the masterplan for New Islington. Then in the heart of Cottonfield Park, CyanLines co-founder Tom Bloxham further explained Urban Splash’s role in the creation and delivery of New Islington, its marina and park. We then headed over the bridge with its secret message into Ancoats, where outside Royal Mills Jonathan shared part of his family history (to find out more, you could go on one of his tours - https://lnkd.in/eAtpEC5w Weaving through the streets of Ancoats we paid a quick visit into the ground floor of Beehive Mill (once home to Sankeys night club) and then moved on to the remarkable Ancoats Green. Delivered by Manchester City Council together with Planit (home of CyanLines co-founder Pete Swift) and our partners Civic, Ancoats Green opened last year and is home to a 30,000 sq ft wildflower meadow, some of the granite paving slabs removed from Albert Square (as part of the ongoing refurb project) and a new play area for families. Finally, we emerged at Cutting Room Square with its busy cafes and bars. From there we split into two groups - one taking the canal from Piccadilly basin while the others stayed on the street and we met up again at Kampus where our walk ended. At just shy of four miles CL2 visits some of the most new and exciting green and blue spaces in Manchester city centre. We hope everyone who joined us enjoyed it as much as we did. Look out for our next walk which will be on Sunday 28 June when we’ll be walking CL1 – Victoria Station and NOMA to Queens Park. 📷 Thank you Nathan Whittaker for the photos! #cyanlines #natureinthecity #manchester

🌿 Help shape the future of CyanLines CyanLines has launched its first survey to find out more about how people use green and blue space across #GreaterManchester, how people would like to use #CyanLine routes, what nature people would like to see and how to connect up existing routes. We’re proud to be a CyanLines partner, supporting a growing network of greener, better-connected routes across #GreaterManchester. CyanLines is creating more than 100 miles of joined-up paths along rivers, canals, viaducts and neighbourhood streets, making everyday journeys easier and improving access to green spaces and waterways. In #Salford, we’ve seen how well-designed connections can shape how places are used and valued. From New Bailey to the emerging Crescent Salford neighbourhood, walking and cycling routes have been designed in from the outset. Cllr Bev Craig, leader of Manchester City Council said, “CyanLines will make a difference. It’s about something bigger: climate resilience, tackling air pollution and creating a city of the future. There’s room for you to volunteer or be a backer. We want everyone to be part of it, to play a role, because that’s the only way we’re going to deliver 100 miles.” 🔗 Have your say: https://lnkd.in/exefn9YJ #CyanLines #SustainablePlaces #ActiveTravel #ConnectedPlaces

  • Walk this way ➡️ It’s fair to say the whole CyanLines team loves a good walk!  Just last week Tom Bloxham, Steve Connor, Carragh Godolphin-Teague, Lisa Ashurst, Kelly-Marie Rodgers, Clare Dentith DipM, Megan Brown and Andrew Read clocked up a whopping 130 miles (291,000 steps) between them! We’re more than chuffed to be off to a flying start for Greater Manchester Moving GM Walking Festival starting tomorrow and runing throughout May. So how did we rack up 130 miles? A walkshop along CL4 – Irwell and Castlefield Loop with Hilary McGrady and Mike Innerdale from the National Trust. We're thrilled the National Trust is one of our of charity partners and we’re looking forward to working closer together and supporting their brilliant activity across the city region, including the inspiring Sky Garden challenge and Castlefield Viaduct phase 2 project. Steve led a walking design session along the two new routes we’re plotting – CL5 and CL6 – (watch this space) as well as fitting in an early morning run on CL3 – St Peter’s Square to the Whitworth Art Gallery. Lisa joined Women in Property on their walk of CL4 as part of their conference and then on Friday designed a running route with Sarah Payling and Kirsty Wade-Potter encompassing CL4 for the Housing 2026 Conference charity run taking place on Thursday 25 June - more info here: https://lnkd.in/ebkeatyD Kelly joined community-led social enterprise Easy Come Easy Grow Manchester, for a walk and talk around Newton Heath, joining up with parts of our CL2 route – Mayfield, New Islington and Ancoats Loop. Carragh took part in a very exciting site meeting and route walk along CL1 with our partners from FEC UK and Factory International. Why not tell us about the places you’ve been exploring around Manchester? Or get inspired by the Manchester Walking Festival which has over 350 events planned in May including our FREE walk on Saturday 02 May taking in CL 2 – the Mayfield, New Islington and Ancoats Loop. • Help us shape the future of CyanLines Today we're launching our first public survey to gather as much information as we can to help us make important decisions about CyanLines. Our survey will help us determine what existing green and blue spaces across Greater Manchester are working well and which need improving, where CyanLines are most needed, how people would like to use the CyanLines routes, what nature people like to see, and importantly, how can we connect to all the amazing work communities are already doing across Greater Manchester to help bring people closer to nature. Cllr Bev Craig said, “CyanLines will make a difference. It’s about something bigger: climate resilience, tackling air pollution and creating a city of the future. There’s room for you to volunteer or be a backer. We want everyone to be part of it, to play a role, because that’s the only way we’re going to deliver 100 miles. Sign up and be part of it!” We'd love the survey to be filled in by as many adults and children who live, work and visit Greater Manchester as possible! It's completely anonymous to complete and should only take five minutes. You can do the survey here: https://ow.ly/8INx50YQtNw and please share it with your family, friends and colleagues. #cyanlines #natureinthecity #manchester

  • Join our next FREE walk on Saturday 02 May Our third free walk of the year will visit some of the coolest places in the City right now, as we are guided around CL2 - the Mayfield, New Islington and Ancoats Loop. Starting at the fantastic new Station Sanctuary at Piccadilly station at 2.45pm on Saturday 02 May we'll take a short stroll to the wonderful 6.5 acre Park at Mayfield Manchester. It boasts over 300 trees, wetland and wildflower planting and is a new haven for wildlife in the city. From here, we'll meander through Cottonfield Park at New Islington and on to Ancoats Green - lovingly regenerated for the growing neighbourhood that surrounds it. Beyond the green spaces, our guide Jonathan Schofield will lead us through the historical heart of Ancoats and the Northern Quarter - vibrant creative districts packed with cool independent cafes, bars and restaurants, including the restored Victorian marketplace, Mackie Mayor food hall. Kampus will mark our last stop on the tour before we head back to the station. We're expecting this to be busy one, so make sure you secure your tickets in plenty of time - just follow this link - https://lnkd.in/eXiBCCv3? #cyanlines #natureinthecity #manchester

  • Thanks so much for joining us Jennie Harrison so glad you enjoyed it, despite the bobbins (such a brilliant word) weather. Our next free walk will be on Saturday 2 May from 2.45pm to 5pm taking in CL 2 Mayfield, New Islington and Ancoats Loop. Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/e2GJCjqj

🚶🏻♀️ Bit of a “field trip” on Sunday with CyanLines… guided walk led by the fabulous Jonathan Schofield from St Peter's Square to Whitworth Park (CL3). 👏🏻 Thanks to Pete Swift, Steve Connor, Tom Bloxham, Clare Dentith DipM and Lisa Ashurst (plus everyone else behind the scenes and involved in organising) ☔️ Unfortunately the weather was bobbins at the beginning but it did stop raining (and it didn't dampen our spirits!) 🏙️ Great to see some new sides of bits of the city I thought I knew (I did not know there was public access the riverside bit of Circle Square) and the recently revamped Quadrangle looks very snazzy! 🌳 Brunswick street park - more of this please (closing a road, which creates a wonderful space, with alternatives for motorists... like Cavendish Street) 🌟 I’m forever fascinated with cities reinventing themselves through infrastructure, and that was a key theme of the walk.
