After interviewing hundreds of candidates, here's the truth: Yes, skills matter, but PROACTIVENESS is what truly sets candidates apart. This has been a common theme at my company. It's what we look for, and it's relatively easy to identify. Here are some things to consider when preparing for an interview that will help set you apart from everyone else. 1. 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄, 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 • Instead of saying "I take initiative," share specific times you: • Spotted and fixed problems without being asked • Created systems that saved your team time • Stepped in when you saw others were overwhelmed 2. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 • What technical challenges can you help with? • Which tasks could you take off their plate? • How can your unique skills complement their weaknesses? 3. 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 • Skip the "team player" cliché • Share specific examples of: • Taking over unpopular but necessary tasks • Using your skills to solve team bottlenecks • Supporting overwhelmed colleagues Come prepared with thoughtful questions about the role and company. A lot of people interviewed for our senior level roles at Netflix. One trait always set the best candidates apart: Specificity. Their interviews reflected that they were well informed about the needs of our teams.. And demonstrated how their backgrounds were well positioned to make a direct impact. My hiring partners typically left those interviews feeling inspired and excited to move forward with these candidates. This trait was so consistent that I actually used it as a hiring metric during my initial screens. Candidates who struggled with this provided verbose responses that signaled their backgrounds were misaligned for the specific needs of our teams. Candidates who stood out could explain exactly what they did, how they did it and the measurable impact of their work. So when you're prepping for your interviews, follow these 3 steps: 1) Go deep into research. Listen to your target company's quarterly earnings calls, watch interviews of the leaders and look through their LinkedIn's to get clues on mutually common values. 2) Draft up answers that use specific examples and focus on the most important needs of the team and company. 3) For each answer, ask yourself "can anybody use these type of responses?" If the answer is yes, then you need to be more specific! Remember if it's an easy response for you, it's an easy response for anybody. Be the standout candidate by being the most specific.
