Maternity-related healthcare costs are rising 8–12% annually, but many of the biggest cost drivers — including preterm birth and NICU admissions — are not always inevitable. Too often, employees experience fragmented care across fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, behavioral health, and primary care, leading to gaps that can impact outcomes and increase costs. Earlier, more coordinated support can make a meaningful difference. Employers can take proactive steps by investing in preconception care, connecting support across the reproductive health journey, encouraging preventive care, and expanding access to mental health services. What’s in a name? Potentially better care, earlier diagnosis, and improved outcomes for millions. A new global consensus initiative published by The Lancet Group proposes renaming PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) to PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome — to better reflect the true complexity of this condition. Why? Because PCOS is not primarily about ovarian cysts, and the current name has long created confusion about the true scope of this condition. Affecting approximately 1 in 8 women globally, PMOS/PCOS extends far beyond ovarian cysts or irregular periods, with links to infertility, pregnancy complications, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, endometrial cancer risk, and mental health challenges. The proposed name change isn't just semantics. It highlights growing recognition that this is a lifelong endocrine and metabolic condition requiring earlier diagnosis, multidisciplinary care, and greater awareness across healthcare and workplace settings. The consensus process involved more than 14,000 patients and healthcare professionals globally, including participation from major medical organizations focused on reproductive and endocrine health.
