Thank you to Cody Nath, President and CEO of Refined Technologies, for sharing his company's second chance hiring program with NOIA members at the National Ocean Industries Association Annual Meeting.
The energy industry is facing a real workforce shortage, and Refined Technologies decided to do something about it. In Harris County, TX alone, 15,000 men and women are released from prison every year. Without stable employment, many cycle back into the system, at significant cost to individuals, communities, and taxpayers. RTI saw a workforce need and a reintegration challenge, and built a program that addresses both.
Partnering with nonprofits including CrossWalk Center, Open Door Mission, and WorkFaith Connection, RTI hires re-entry citizens into real careers, not just entry-level roles. Second-chance hires hold lead shop technician positions. Shop tech retention has improved 30% since the program launched. And RTI's workforce culture, built around what they call their "Artisans," is stronger for it.
RTI is now working to help other companies follow the same path, hosting roundtables, advocating for TWIC card access for re-entry hires, and pushing for field-level client exposure that opens even more doors.
