As the USA prepares to celebrate its 250th year, and @Fort Valley State University marks 130 years of excellence, I am reflecting on my own 31st year of teaching. The true measure of these years isn't found in a calendar, but in the students I have had the honor to teach, advise, and mentor. This class of 2026 is a testament to the power of a dedicated HBCU community: 🎓 Kadyn Baker: Our 4.0 Valedictorian (Chemistry) moving to the University of Alabama for Engineering. 🎓 Charity Smith: Summa Cum Laude (Chemistry) also heading to the University of Alabama for Engineering. 🌍 Malachi Glover: Taking his Mathematics expertise to the University of Texas at Austin for Geosciences. 🌍 Ariyanna Reedy: Moving into the Geosciences Graduate Program at Miami University. 🛡️ Maurice Releford: Transitioning from our research programs into the critical field of Safety & Quality Control. 🍎 Ar'deja Neely & Adayla Jefferson: Our future Middle Grades science teachers who are already GACE-certified and ready to lead. They are truly "agents of change." I am certain they will make this world a better place for all humanity. Congratulations to the Class of 2026! We are still looking for candidates for a geology PhD project about ancient glaciers in New Zealand's Southern Alps. The project will combine field mapping and cosmogenic exposure dating to model past glacier extents. The project will be based at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand with time spent analysing samples at the ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) in Sydney. More expansive older (pre- 50,000 years) glacial ice limits suggest that either (1) the climate was significantly colder and/or wetter in the past, allowing greater glacial mass or (2) that tectonic uplift and erosion have preconditioned mountain valleys to restrict ice extent due to valley deepening, producing less extensive ice margin positions with time. We seek to determine which hypothesis is correct. For more details and instructions on how to apply, see the link in the comments.

What happens when students who have never considered #geoscience are given the opportunity to engage in real field research? At Fort Valley State University, the GEOPaths program led by Aditya Kar is opening doors—introducing students to subsurface imaging, coding, and field geophysics, while connecting them with mentors and industry professionals. For many participants, the experience does more than build technical skills. It inspires new career pathways and strengthens confidence in their place within STEM. Learn how GEOPaths is expanding access to geoscience and helping shape the next generation of scientists. #FVSU #mentoring #STEM #HBCU https://lnkd.in/gNUA8yHA
