SEO automation. Everyone talks about it like it'll replace your entire team. It won't. I run SEO across ecommerce catalogs with thousands of SKUs. Here's what actually works and what quietly makes things worse. What automation is ACTUALLY good for: 👉 Scheduled crawls. On a 10,000 SKU store, pricing updates can break product schema on hundreds of pages overnight. A weekly scheduled crawl catches that in 7 days. Manual auditing? 15-30 days before you even know. By then rich results are gone and recovery takes another 60-90 days. 👉 Rank alerts with thresholds. Not a daily dump of 500 keywords. Set Priority 1 alerts ONLY when a top keyword drops 5+ positions. Split tracking into category pages, product pages, branded queries. A 5 position drop on your top category keyword needs same-day review. Same drop on a long-tail product term? Monthly awareness item. 👉 Reporting that sends itself. GSC connects natively to Looker Studio. So does Ahrefs and Semrush. Connect once, schedule weekly PDF delivery. The 1-4 hours you spend pulling numbers from four tools every cycle goes to zero. 👉 Backlink monitoring. When a site redesign removes a link to your content you have 72 hours to reclaim it with a quick email. Wait 30 days until your next manual check and that window is closed forever. What BREAKS when you automate it: 👉 Content Coverage Decision. Your tool surfaces "cheap running shoes" as a gap. Data is correct. But if you sell at $180 a pair, that traffic won't convert. Tools show volume. They can't evaluate it against your margins, stock levels, or which battles your domain can realistically win. 👉 Content creation without human expertise. AI drafts score well on content tools but Google measures what's MISSING - first-hand experience, original examples, expert perspective. Writing needs a human who knows the product. 👉 Link Building. Automated discovery is brilliant - gap analysis, mention monitoring, lost link alerts. Automate all of it. But automated outreach emails get filtered as spam. The ones that land get deleted. Links earned through automation tend to be low-quality directories that don't move rankings. Leverage real PR and natural relationships to earn links that move the needle. The thing nobody warns you about? Alert fatigue. You monitor everything. Within 2 weeks your team stops reading any of it. The system runs perfectly. Nobody looks at it. 👉The fix is to start with ONLY Priority 1 alerts for revenue-driving pages. Confirm your team reads those. Then add Priority 2 for weekly triage. New Ecommerce SEO article: Use Screaming Frog + ChatGPT to automate SEO text for category pages. In 10 minutes, this process writes 250 pages: So I debated writing this article for a long time but super excited to collaborate with Screaming Frog on this one. This process details how you can create that bottom of the page "SEO text" you see on category pages on commerce sites. If you've worked in commerce SEO long enough, you probably understand that this strategy works quite well. SearchPilot did a study that found removing this text caused a -4% drop in traffic. Polls I've taken say that 82% of people say that this strategy is effective. The problem is that this takes a ton of resourcing that some commerce sites might not have. If you have a lot of SKUs and 5,000+ category pages, this would take a lot of bandwidth from writers. The good news is that you can use Screaming Frog's OpenAI integration to at least serve as a STARTING POINT. Here's the process: 1. Generate Templated Questions: You'll want to do some research to find the templated questions you want to create at scale. This will depend on your industry but a fashion brand might use questions like "What can you wear with [Category]". Write these down in a document. 2. Open Up Screaming Frog 3. Enable Storing HTML: In Screaming Frog go to Configuration > Spider > Extraction. In the “HTML” box ensure that both “Store HTML” and “Store Rendered HTML” are turned on. 4. Connect Screaming Frog to OpenAI: Navigate to Configuration > API Access > AI > OpenAI. Add your API key here and click "Connect" 5. Configure Your Prompt: Next go to the Prompt Configuration” tab and select “Add". You'll see a table to configure your prompt. Set the "Text" to "Page Text" and add your prompt into the "Prompt" column. Full prompt I use is in the article. Save these changes. 6. Filter Your Category Pages: Filter to have Screaming Frog only crawl category pages. Go to Configuration > Include to open the “Include” filter then type "/your_category_directory/.*" 7. Start Your Crawl: Start your crawl and then navigate to the "AI" column in the right side bar and find your prompt name. You'll see the text created in this report. You'll find that Screaming Frog very quickly generates this text. If you have a 10,000 category pages, Screaming Frog would create this in just 7 hours. I repeat, this process is meant to be utilized as a starting point only. You need a copywriter to review, improve the content, structure internal linking etc. However, if this is a huge task for your site, this process will get the ball rolling.

My AI SEO Tool Stack. I've been using AI for SEO since 2021, and I'd argue it's allowed me to do the work of 4 people. Here are my self-made GPTs that allow that productivity increase. 1. Page Credibility Checker: Analyses websites based on credibility signals reported to benefit SEO. 2. COM-B Analysis. Takes a website through a COM-B analysis, giving advice and offering improvement suggestions to encourage users to take the desired actions. 3. Supercharging: Rewrites page titles and meta descriptions using behavioural science principles to increase CTR. 4. E-E-A-T Audit. Possibly my favourite. It runs a site through a 30-point E-E-A-T analysis, provides information for improvements, and identifies weaknesses. 5. Semantic writer. This rewrites text for a higher information gain rate. 6. Inurl search string creator. It's quite a time saver. It creates a list of search string operators for tech audits and saves me from typing them. I just give it a domain and the list appears. 7. Buyer Journey Analysis I give it a website, and it explains the logical buyer's journey around the products or services, suggesting keywords to target and why. 8. SEO Content ideator It analyses a website and suggests content ideas to increase revenue. 9. Blog Intro Wizard Rewrites blog intros based on some well-known frameworks. 10. Lede Machine Adapts an article to reduce the text but to improve the flow of information gain rate from humans. 11. Linkmapper A bespoke AI tool that maps backlinks visually. 12. Newsletter Formatting My weekly newsletter is formatted and introductions written using this. I have others, but here are some I didn't build: Longform Blog Cyborg: A GPT by Jacob McMillen is the best FREE AI writer out there. Text Razor: analyses how an NLP processing tool reads a page. Visualflows: allows you to create a visualisation of sitemaps and funnels. Copilot by Semrush: spots SEO issues early. Wikigraph: creates a topical map of a subject through Wikipedia data. I have many more, but these are probably my main go-to AI tools right now. I also use AI for a range of other tasks using prompts and data analyses. The AI-enabled SEO is vastly more productive. But in order for you to build GPTs and use AI, you still have to know if the results are good or not. Many times, I get results that are not good. But it takes seconds and a little direction to improve these. Also, a big shout to Jonathan Boshoff, who has created many great AI/ SEO tools and is currently leading the field in this area. Don't fear AI for SEO, embrace it.
