Experienced machinists are retiring. At the same time, automation, robotics and digital systems are redefining what the modern machinist needs to know. The skills shortage in manufacturing is not a future risk. It is happening now. So who will run the factories of the future? For nearly two decades, Sandvik Coromant has partnered with the NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) to answer that question. Together, they built the Sandvik Coromant Center for Machinist Technology, a 31,000 square foot training environment where students work with industrial grade equipment from day one. Each year, around 1,300 students train here. 86 percent secure employment within nine months. Employer satisfaction stands at 98 percent. This is how industry and education move forward together. Curious how the collaboration started and what makes it work? Full story: https://go.sandvik/28w #LifeAtSandvik #STEM #Manufacturing #Engineering

What started as an idea gradually evolved into one of the most valuable learning experiences of our engineering journey. Working on the real-time Tappet Detection System MVP in collaboration with the ECE and Mechanical Engineering departments and Ashok Leyland gave us the opportunity to experience how real-world engineering projects are built beyond textbooks and labs. The journey involved extensive R&D, technical presentations, repeated modifications, and detailed report preparation. Alongside handling academic responsibilities, balancing project deadlines, testing sessions, discussions, and continuous improvements became both challenging and rewarding. Every struggle during development helped us learn something new — whether technically or personally. Using technologies such as STM32H7, digital MEMS microphones, DMA, Raspberry Pi and real-time audio processing, we developed a system capable of capturing multi-channel engine sound data for predictive diagnostics and future AI-based analysis. The project strengthened our understanding of embedded systems, signal processing, real-time acquisition, and industrial product development. One of the proudest moments was seeing the system deployed at the Ashok Leyland Ennore Facility for testing and validation. It truly reflected the impact of academic–industry collaboration and practical innovation. Heartfelt thanks to Ashok Leyland, Panimalar Engineering College, our mentors, faculty members, and teammates for their continuous guidance, support, teamwork, and encouragement throughout this memorable journey. The question of who will drive the next generation of manufacturing is one I hear more and more. As experienced machinists retire and the role itself evolves alongside automation and digital systems, building the next generation of talent has become one of the industry's most pressing priorities. It's a challenge Sandvik Coromant and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Canada started working on together nearly two decades ago. The Sandvik Coromant Center for Machinist Technology, which opened in 2008, was built on the idea that closing the gap between education and industry takes sustained commitment from both sides. Today, around 1,300 students a year train there in conditions that reflect the real demands of modern manufacturing. 86% are employed within nine months of graduating. Employer satisfaction sits at 98%. For me, that's what genuine partnership looks like. NAIT brings the learning environment and educational expertise. We bring tooling, industry perspective, and a long-term stake in the outcome. Together, students leave ready for the work that awaits them. Huge congratulations to the teams at Sandvik Coromant and NAIT who have built and sustained this over nearly twenty years. 👏 Building the future of machining through education and industry collaboration https://lnkd.in/e7xCsY29

Bridging Classroom Learning with Industrial Practice ⚙️ The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham successfully organized an industrial visit to the Volvo Trucks manufacturing facility, Hoskote, Bengaluru, on 24th April 2026. This visit provided our students with valuable exposure to real-time heavy vehicle manufacturing processes and modern production systems. Students had the opportunity to observe key operations such as cab fabrication using MIG and spot welding, multi-layer paint shop processes, structured assembly line operations, and powertrain integration. One of the most impactful aspects of the visit was understanding how theoretical concepts from manufacturing technology, material science, and production engineering are implemented in a real industrial environment. The emphasis on quality control, safety protocols, and systematic workflow offered students a comprehensive perspective of professional manufacturing practices. The interaction with industry experts and the exposure to end-to-end truck assembly and testing significantly enhanced students’ practical understanding and motivated them to explore careers in the automotive and manufacturing sectors. A sincere thank you to the team at Volvo Trucks for facilitating this insightful and enriching experience. Faculty Coordinators: Dr. Ulhas K. 🇺🇸 plants didn't all relocate to Asia. Many of them just moved within the country. 44% American factory jobs (→ 5.6M blue collars) sit in just 8 states. I run a deep tech company serving Western manufacturers. Yes, 3 decades of offshoring gutted a lot. But it never finished the job: 12.7M Americans still clock into a factory every morning. Here's mostly where: → California: 1.22M (aerospace, biotech, food) → Texas: 971K (semis, petrochem, electronics) → Ohio: 688K (autos, steel, plastics) → Michigan: 598K (autos, machinery) → Illinois: 575K (food, machinery, chemicals) → Pennsylvania: 562K (steel, pharma, food) → Indiana: 523K (autos, pharma, steel) → Wisconsin: 463K (food, machinery, paper) The raw numbers hide 3 things you should not miss. 1. Per capita, the Midwest wins. Wisconsin sends 7.85% of its population to a factory every morning. Indiana follows at 7.69%, Iowa at 6.78%. California's 1.22M sounds dominant. But it's only 3.1% of its 39M people. 2. The Midwest quietly runs the world. Eli Lilly out of Indianapolis is the largest pharma by market cap. Deere out of Moline is the largest ag-equipment maker. Abbott out of Lake Bluff is the largest medical-devices company by revenue. None of them sit in Silicon Valley. All of them are surrounded by suppliers, machinists, and metallurgists nobody outside the Midwest can name. 3. The new factories aren't going to Detroit. TSMC just committed $165B to Arizona. Samsung is dropping $44B in Texas. Hyundai is putting $12.6B into Georgia. The Sun Belt is the new US industrial map. The Rust Belt isn't where the next decade gets built. The real bottleneck isn't where the jobs are. It's who fills them. Every plant I visit has a help-wanted sign out front, and most owners would buy another machine tool tomorrow if they had someone to run it. That's why programs like ACE (America's Cutting Edge) and METAL (Metallurgical Engineering Trades Apprenticeship & Learning) are critical right now. 🇪🇺 should be drawing its own version of these programs. What happens when millions of skilled jobs have no one to fill them? More than 2 million manufacturing roles in the US could sit empty by 2030. At Eagle Group, we think solutions start much earlier than a job posting. They can start in elementary classrooms with programs like Foundry in a Box. And they can continue through high school engineering labs, and carry into university competitions like Cast in Steel. We invest in the next generation of metalcasters because manufacturing isn’t just what we do, it’s essential to the strength of our entire country. #Manufacturing #WorkforceDevelopment #Metalcasting #MadeInMichigan #CastInSteel #FoundryInABox
