According to the latest 3GPP Release 20 (TR 22.870), the network is evolving from a simple pipe for data into a platform that thinks and learns. Here is the simplified breakdown of the new 6G AI landscape: 🔄 1. The Two Roles of AI AI for the Network: The network uses AI to fix itself. Before any new AI "update" goes live, it must pass a test in a Network Digital Twin—a perfect virtual copy of the network—to ensure it won't cause a crash. The Network for AI: Think of the network as a giant, distributed computer. Operators will host "Edge AI Centers" where you can rent processing power (GPUs) to run heavy AI tasks right on the network, saving your phone's battery. 🤖 2. The Rise of "AI Agents" 6G officially introduces AI Agents. These aren't just apps; they are autonomous assistants that can: Understand what you want (e.g., "Find me a parking spot") and talk to the network to make it happen. The network will even recognize if a request comes from a human or an AI Agent, so it can provide the right speed and security for each. 📚 3. Real-Time Intelligence (RAG) Ever worry about AI being outdated? 6G uses Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). This allows AI to "ask" the network for live facts—like current traffic or signal strength—so its answers are always based on what is happening right now. 💡 The Big Picture We are shifting from "connecting people" to "orchestrating intelligence." Debate around sovereign AI framed much of the opening panel. Points raised included: - Sovereignty will cost more. - Renting GPUs, not buying, fits better with operator IT-like workloads [has implications for operators moving into AI Factories, but these operators are not leaders in this area]. - Latency centric models are hard because end-to-end fibre is just 5ms, ie for most use cases large central AI data centres (Ai Factories)are fine. - Operators will complement hyperscalers, not compete. - Difference now compared with 5 or 10 years ago is that the mood and regulation has changed in Europe pushing trust and control up the agenda. - Automation of course also discussed, and role of agents. "AI voice" raised, in essence this is AI branding to existing anti spam systems, live translation, and other voice services that are direct evolutions of what everyone in voice has been working on for the last two decades. As a consumer, you only notice a telecom network when it does not work as it should. Soon, we will likely take many of the advantages AI provides us as a given and only react when it misbehaves. That puts even higher expectations on reliability, trust, and user experience. AI is already changing how networks are designed, operated, optimized, and monetized. But technology adoption alone is not enough. Users ultimately measure value through experience, simplicity, trust, and reliability. At Ericsson, we see AI becoming deeply integrated into both: • AI for networks, enabling more autonomous, adaptive, and efficient operations • Networks for AI, evolving connectivity to support AI-native devices, applications, and real-time intelligent services The next wave will require networks that are not only faster, but also more predictive, context-aware, and responsive to user intent. On April 30, 2013, Intel Capital, Samsung Ventures, and Telefónica Digital invested in Expect Labs. At the time, it looked like an early bet on digital assistants. But the real idea was deeper. Expect Labs was building technology that could understand a conversation in real time and surface relevant information before the user made a formal search. This was not just voice control. It was context-aware AI. In 2013, the market was not ready. The models were limited, devices were weaker, data was fragmented, and users were not yet trained to work with AI assistants. Expect Labs did not become the winner of the AI assistant market. Later, it became MindMeld and was acquired by Cisco. But the direction was right. What looked early in 2013 later became normal: conversational AI, meeting assistants, copilots, AI search, and embedded intelligence inside workflows. That is why this date matters.
