✨A week has passed since the 17th ITS European Congress came to a close, but the discussions and reflections continue to shape conversations across the intelligent transport community. The closing remarks of the Congress highlighted an important reality for the future of mobility: innovation must now translate into deployment at scale. Delivered by CEO Joost VANTOMME (LL.M) and complemented by Chief Rapporteur Professor Eric Sampson’s video address, this final summary provided a consolidated overview of the main outcomes and a preview of the forthcoming Post-Congress Report.  🚗 Safety and resilience through intelligent systems: From Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) and V2X communication to Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), discussions explored how interoperability, smart infrastructure and data-driven safety analysis are shaping the next generation of safer mobility systems. 🚉 Multimodal mobility system management: Sessions highlighted the transition towards integrated mobility ecosystems combining MaaS, AI, digital twins and public-private collaboration, while also emphasising accessibility, affordability and behavioural change as critical factors for successful deployment. 🚚Smart and sustainable logistics in the digital era: The Congress showcased innovations in freight and logistics, including heavy vehicle charging infrastructure, federated data-sharing platforms and autonomous last-mile delivery solutions combining automation with human oversight. ✈️ Enhancing transport and mobility beyond the road: Emerging mobility domains, including VTOL systems and multimodal integration, demonstrated the growing importance of user-centric deployment, societal acceptance and new regulatory approaches for future transport systems. 𝗜𝗧𝗦 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗹 — 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿: 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 The 17th ITS European Congress got underway in Istanbul today, with speakers including Angelos Amditis of ERTICO - ITS Europe, European Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, and EU delegation deputy head Jurgis Vilcinskas all pointing to the same challenge: the ITS sector has run enough pilots — now it needs to deliver at scale. Vilcinskas put it directly: "For many years, European cities have lived with a familiar pattern — we launched pilots, we tested digital tools, and too often it remained a pilot. But today, the change is really in the air." Tzitzikostas, speaking by video, pointed to revisions to the ITS Directive, the EU-funded NGConnect project spanning 77 partners across 33 countries, and cross-border autonomous driving test beds as evidence that momentum is building. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a highly insightful webinar on “AI-Driven Smart Rail Transportation – Advancing Intelligent, Efficient and Inclusive Rail Systems with Technology”, jointly organized by UITP Asia-Pacific and China Association of Metros (CAMET). What stood out to me most was how the conversation around AI in rail transportation is rapidly moving beyond theory into real-world implementation and measurable impact. The session brought together global experts and industry leaders to discuss the practical applications, technical innovation, and evolving industry practices of artificial intelligence in rail transportation systems. A few key takeaways from the session: 👉 AI-driven solutions for rail operation safety, passenger service optimisation, and infrastructure management 👉 Global perspectives and practical experiences from Europe, Asia-Pacific, and other regions on integrating AI into rail transit systems 👉 Policy direction, technical standards, and industry challenges shaping the future of intelligent rail transportation It was particularly interesting to see how transport authorities, operators, and technology stakeholders across different regions are approaching the same challenge: How do we make rail systems smarter, more efficient, more inclusive, and more resilient for the future? Sessions like these reinforce how important collaboration and knowledge-sharing are in accelerating the intelligent transformation of public transport systems globally. For my kids, train rides are still somehow magical. The ICE pulling into the station, the shunting loco moving stuff or the KVB-tram on the way to kindergarten. Cologne makes that easy. It's not just us on the platform: the numbers make that case too. Rail passenger transport in Europe averages around 33 gCO2 per passenger-kilometer. Hence, rail isn't just charming, it plays a major role in our future mobility. I joined Railnova as Senior Business Development Manager, being accountable for DACH. Railnova a Knorr-Bremse company, based in Brussels, full-stack across hardware, software, analytics and AI. Around 3.000 locomotives and multi-units are already on the platform. Rail has always taken a large share of my work for almost a decade now. It already started at Dräger Safety with the renowned Rescue Trains and continued at Harsco Rail Europe. Even at Deutz, where I led the Eastern European and Central Asian business, rail kept finding its way back in, through tenders, applications, and the work the teams there did to move data-based services forward. For me, programming and applied math is how I check the substance underneath a commercial argument. Last year, I formalized this at the OpenEDG Python Institute and in mathematics coursework. So that when we talk IoT, condition-based monitoring, predictive diagnostics, or AI, I can follow what's happening in the data. Railnova fits that precisely. They design their own hardware (Railster) and write their own software/applications with Railfleet and Railgenius. AI-driven semi-automated decision support is already in production, and the next generation is under development. But first and foremost, the team cares about the craft.
