📱Here's a question that doesn't get asked enough in smart city conversations: who is the technology actually for? The New European Bauhaus initiative, one of the most exciting ideas to come out of the European Commission in recent years, challenges us to make the green transition not just functional, but attractive, inclusive and human. It asks us to design futures that people actually want to live in. That's the lens through which 3DxVERSE Project approaches digital twins. 🏘️ Take our Almelo pilot for example. There, we're not just building a technical model of an energy system. We're building a tool that lets a 70-year-old resident visualise how a wind turbine would look from her garden or how much savings in energy bills solar panels would mean. That lets a local cooperative explore whether a district heating network is financially fair for lower-income households. That lets young people engage with the future of their village before decisions are made for them. 🔎The digital twin becomes a democratic tool. A shared space where complex trade-offs become understandable, where every voice has access to the same data, and where the energy transition becomes something communities choose together rather than something that happens to them. This is the New European Bauhaus in practice: technology that is open, inclusive, and anchored in the places and people it serves. 🤝🏻 💬 What does inclusive digital innovation look like in your city or region? We'd love to hear from you. When thinking about transport networks, the first thing that usually comes to mind is roads and cars. But what about air transport? ✈️ Airports are vital nodes within Europe’s mobility system and require greater attention in the journey toward more sustainable transport. At 3DxVERSE Project, we are exploring how real-time data and simulation tools can support more efficient and, very importantly, more sustainable airport operations. But airports don’t operate in isolation. They are part of a wider mobility ecosystem, linking to surrounding transport infrastructure and communities. By strengthening these connections through the power of digital twin, our project is addressing some of today’s pressing challenges: 🟢 managing traffic flows in and around airports 🟢 reducing greenhouse gas emissions 🟢 improving accessibility to transport services 🟢 enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists But how are we actually achieving this? Digital twin helps us predict and make informed decisions on ⚡ electrification of airport ground operations and vehicle fleets 🍃 deployment of sustainable aviation fuels and zero-emission aircraft technologies ♻️ integration of renewable energy sources into airport and mobility hub systems 💡 development of seamless, multimodal, low-emission transport systems linking air and road networks For more info about the 3DxVERSE Project: visit our website: https://3dxverse.eu/ 💻 Or have a look at our Youtube channel: https://lnkd.in/eN42kFaj 🎞️ Adecs Airinfra | Almelo-Energie | Ambrosys | Continental | AUMOVIO| De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences | ERTICO - ITS Europe | iLabs Technologies | @FHC Corp. | ITS mobility | sustainably.io | @Muncipality of Timisora #SmartCities #Airportsustainability #sustainablemobility #digitaltwin

Proud to see the work of European Citiverses Uniting for Inclusiveness placing inclusiveness at the center of Europe’s digital future. What makes the EU approach to Digital Twins and CitiVerses different is its comprehensiveness. Europe is not only investing in technology. It is investing in governance, ethics, interoperability, sustainability, accessibility, and citizen empowerment at the same time. As an academic working in digitalisation at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics, I see every day how technology can either bridge or widen inequalities related to social welfare, income gaps, and poverty. Digital transformation without inclusiveness risks leaving vulnerable communities further behind. This is why the EU’s #CitiVerse ecosystem is so important. Through four complementary projects (3DxVERSE, CU, SENSE, and x-CITE) Europe is building a human-centric digital future where each project contributes a different but connected dimension to the same vision. Some important insights highlighted in this attached report include: • Inclusiveness must be embedded from the design phase of digital twins, not added later. • Citizens want transparency and control over how their data is used. • Accessibility, digital literacy, and trust are critical for adoption. • Co-creation with communities leads to more resilient and socially accepted urban innovation. • Ethical governance and interoperability are essential to avoid fragmented digital ecosystems. At sustainably.io, where we lead communication, dissemination and exploitation activities for 3DxVERSE Project, we strongly share this vision: digital twins should serve people first while creating sustainable, inclusive, secure, and citizen-driven living communities. A worthwhile report for anyone working on smart cities, AI, XR, urban innovation, and digital public infrastructure. #CitiVerse #DigitalTwins #LocalDigitalTwins #InclusiveInnovation #SmartCities #DigitalEurope #AI #XR #Sustainability #CitizenEngagement #UrbanInnovation #DataGovernance European Commission 3DxVERSE Project European Citiverses Uniting for Inclusiveness SENSE Citiverse x-CITE CitiVerse Project EU LDT Toolbox - Empowering Smart Cities
“I want to go there now!” Across Europe, cities are investing in Local Digital Twins and human-centred Citiverse development. But how can these technologies also support accessibility, participation and inclusion? We are exploring how digital twins, AI and immersive technology can help people experience and prepare for urban environments before arriving there physically. The project recently published the insight report "I want to go there now!", based on interviews, surveys and inclusive user research with families of children with disabilities and diverse accessibility needs. The report highlights how uncertainty around accessibility, crowds, sound environments and unfamiliar places can become barriers to participation in city life or event experiences. The insights also point to how cities can identify barriers earlier and design more inclusive urban experiences from the start. Using “Virtual Gothenburg”, the project is now developing and testing inclusive digital twin experiences that allow people to explore city environments remotely before visiting them physically. Our ambition is to contribute practical experiences, methods and knowledge to the growing European ecosystem around: ⚪ Local Digital Twins ⚪ Human-centred Citiverse development ⚪ Integrating accessibility and universal design into digital infrastructure We look forward to continuing the dialogue together with cities and European initiatives working in this space. #LocalDigitalTwins #Citiverse #InclusiveCities #Accessibility #HumanCentredDesign #SmartCities #DigitalEurope #OASC #LivinginEU #EDIC

At the ITS Congresses in Istanbul 2 weeks ago, Ralf Willenbrock delivered a highly valuable session on the future of intelligent, sustainable, and data-driven mobility. One of the key messages was clear: road transport emissions are still not decreasing fast enough. As cities grow and mobility demand increases, traditional traffic management approaches need to evolve. Ralf shared strong insights from Hamburg, where connected traffic lights, roadside units, and intelligent speed guidance systems were used to optimize traffic flow. The results showed the real potential of smart infrastructure: ➡️ Stop times reduced from around 600 seconds to nearly 200 seconds ➡️ CO₂ emissions reduced by approximately 17% This is where projects like 3DxVERSE Project become especially relevant. By focusing on Digital Twin technologies and real-world mobility and energy use cases, 3DxVERSE Project supports cities and local authorities in exploring smarter, safer, and more sustainable urban systems. It also highlights the role of better data, collaboration, and Digital Twin-based discussions in understanding how future urban mobility systems can become more sustainable. A big thank you to Ralf for sharing such valuable insights at the ITS Congresses and highlighting how Digital Twins can contribute to cleaner, more efficient, and future-ready mobility. From Istanbul to Europe’s digital mobility future. 🌍🚇 Last week, the 17th ITS Congresses in Istanbul brought together public authorities, cities, researchers, technology providers and industry leaders under a clear theme: “Bridging Innovation: Integrated, safe and seamless mobility.” Across the Congress, one message stood out: smart mobility is moving from pilots to real-world deployment. Istanbul was a strong setting for this discussion. With complex daily mobility across road, rail, sea and public transport networks, the city showed why integration matters in practice. The Congress also highlighted key priorities for the next phase of intelligent transport: safer and more resilient systems, better use of mobility data, multimodal transport management, sustainable logistics and stronger digital infrastructure. For 3DxVERSE Project, these discussions strongly resonate with the project’s mission. By connecting data, simulation and 3D visualisation, Local Digital Twins can help cities, communities and airports better understand complex systems before decisions are made in the real world. This connection is especially visible in Hamburg and Timișoara. In Hamburg, 3DxVERSE Project focuses on a mobility digital twin for traffic, connected and automated mobility, and ITS services. In Timișoara, the project explores low-carbon urban mobility by bringing together public transport, traffic data and local energy systems. The wider 3DxVERSE Project pilot ecosystem also shows how Local Digital Twins can support different contexts: from energy-positive living communities in Almelo to airport operations, CO₂ reduction and noise management in Aruba. The takeaway from Istanbul was clear: the future of intelligent transport depends on deployment, integration and collaboration. 3DxVERSE Project is proud to contribute to this transition.
