What if the technologies driving the green transition didn’t depend on scarce and critical resources?   Many of the solutions and materials we rely on for technological development today are expensive, limited, and vulnerable to supply challenges. This makes it difficult to scale sustainable technologies globally.   Through the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Programme, we support ambitious, interdisciplinary research that aims to generate new knowledge to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing society.   The themes for 2027 are now open for applications in open competition. One of the themes, “Harnessing novel Earth-abundant materials for sustainable technologies”, focuses on how we can replace scarce materials with abundant alternatives such as iron, silicon, and carbon.   By harnessing the potential of these materials, we can enable more sustainable and scalable technologies, from energy storage to manufacturing, while reducing dependence on limited and fossil resources.   As highlighted by Kasper Nørgaard, Director, Natural Sciences, research in this area helps pave the way for the next generation of technologies and a more resource-efficient future. 🚀 Today we kicked off the workshop “SEAL-HYDROGEN: From Lab Innovation to Industrial Scale-Up” in Valencia The Terminal Hub The event opened with welcoming remarks from Project Coordinator Gonzalo Abellán Sáez and Felipe Carrasco , Regional Secretary for Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs of the Valencian Government, highlighting the importance of collaboration between research and industry to accelerate the deployment of green hydrogen technologies. Bringing together leading experts from academia and industry, the workshop will explore key challenges and opportunities in making hydrogen technologies more efficient, sustainable, and ready for industrial implementation. Euro-Funding at the “Accelerating clean industrial deployment” event. Marie L. and Javier Lahuerta i De Manuel, our colleagues from Brussels, will be at “Accelerating clean industrial deployment: insights, challenges, and opportunities”, an event that brings together key EU stakeholders, industry leaders, and innovators to discuss the future of industrial decarbonisation and the effective deployment of innovation in Europe. The activities focus on sectors linked to the CSAs (Clusters of Support Actions) DIAMONDS4IF, REALIZE Project, LEADS CCUS Project, H2IF and 2DPLOY Project, with the objective of aligning efforts and fostering discussions on: - mechanisms to bring mature results to real industrial scale, - ways to effectively connect Horizon projects with the Innovation Fund and - reflecting on the barriers that are slowing down the deployment of innovations for a clean industry. Sustainability + Resilience + Reindustrialisation = EU agenda! Discussions at today’s Cleantech Conference in Brussels are increasingly centred around industrial scale-up, downstream manufacturing, resilient value chains and Europe’s ability to build and retain strategic production capacity. Competitiveness, implementation speed and industrial capability are emerging as defining priorities for Europe’s next chapter. For PaperShell, these discussions are highly relevant. Scaling biogenic material technologies across construction, electronics and defence requires scalable production systems, manufacturing capacity and resilient European supply chains. Interesting to see how strongly the conversation is now moving towards industrial capability and scale-up as strategic priorities for Europe.
