We have started early engagement to help shape planning for growth around four key transport hubs in Newcastle: 🚉 Newcastle Interchange 🚉 Hamilton Station 🚉 Adamstown Station 🚉 Kotara Station These areas have been nominated by the NSW Government as Transport Oriented Development (TOD) precincts, where new statewide planning rules apply. We are taking a place-based approach to plan for growth that reflects the unique opportunities and constraints of each precinct, while still delivering housing. Feedback received during this phase will help shape the next phase of planning, including the preparation of draft urban design framework for each precinct. I'm encouraging local authorities to put forward proposals under a new call for applications through the Building and Land Acquisition Measure of the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Up to €13 million is being made available to help acquire vacant or derelict buildings and sites and bring them back into use as community facilities. Councils can apply for up to €500,000 and purchase up to three buildings or sites to redevelop into multi-use spaces that meet local needs. Since the scheme was introduced, over €210 million has been allocated to more than 1,900 projects, helping make towns and villages more attractive places to live, visit and invest. We've already seen really good examples where old buildings have been brought back into use - now they're spaces people are actually using, and that's what matters. I'd encourage councils to work closely with their communities to identify projects that will be valued and well used.

Alongside this, a new Housing Design Standards Supplementary Plan will also be developed, focusing on the quality and design of new homes and residential areas. Ambitious plans to build 580 high-quality, energy efficient council homes over the next five years are at the centre of a new housing strategy for Somerset. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Somerset Council Executive, members voted to adopt Homes in Somerset and Somerset Council’s first joint Social Housing Development Strategy, providing guidance and structure for the housing development programme of the Housing Revenue Account (HRA). The approach details the ambitious goal to build 580 new council homes by March 2031, with a spotlight on affordability, sustainability and meeting the needs of Somerset’s diverse communities.
