We’re approaching an incredible milestone on Zooniverse: 1 BILLION classifications. Every classification, transcription, drawing, tag and click made by more than 3 million volunteers across Zooniverse projects has helped researchers answer questions that would otherwise be impossible to answer at this scale. To celebrate the countdown, we’ve created a live classification counter, so visitors can watch us get closer to 1 billion classifications in real time: https://lnkd.in/gFaHwRm4 This milestone belongs to the entire Zooniverse community. Whether you joined recently or have been classifying with us for years, thank you for being part of it. As we get closer to 1 billion classifications, we’d also love to hear from you. We are saddened to share the passing of Candice Hansen-Koharcheck, a pioneering planetary scientist and an inspiration for and one of the leads of the Planet Four projects on Zooniverse. She was also a contributing researcher to the Jovian Vortex Hunter project on Zooniverse. Candy’s warmth, generosity, and passion for solar system exploration inspired countless collaborators and volunteers across our community, and her impact on planetary science will be felt for generations. Today Zooniverse has reached an extraordinary milestone: 3 million volunteers contributing to people-powered research around the world. Across disciplines ranging from astronomy and ecology to history and cell biology, this global community continues to make large-scale research possible in ways that would not otherwise exist. Happy Citizen Science Month 🌍 This April, Zooniverse invites everyone to take part in real research, one small contribution at a time. Together with our partners at SciStarter, we’re joining a global programme of live, online events where volunteers work side by side on active research projects, including several from Zooniverse. Join us on April 2, April 22 and April 29 to explore Martian clouds, identify wildlife or investigate comets alongside scientists and fellow volunteers. Join us at Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Weeks - HNPW where we’ll get straight to the point on how organisations are collaborating through #LogIE to improve humanitarian response. From static PDF logistics maps to LogIE’s interactive platform, the Logistics Cluster has evolved how information is shared. Today, LogIE brings together data, knowledge, and technology to support responders with optimised routes—together with key partners: HeiGIT brings the algorithm behind the scenes, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team brings the road‑mapping community, KoboToolbox has data collection tools, while Zooniverse brings their community for data classification and mapping. We are delighted to announce that Zooniverse has been selected for a 2025 Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI) award from Schmidt Sciences. HAVI supports groundbreaking work at the intersection of AI and the humanities. The 23 awarded projects based across multiple continents and disciplines, will use AI to open new windows into human history, culture, language, and creativity. In our project, “Communities in the Loop: AI for Cultures & Contexts in Multimodal Archives,” Zooniverse Co-PI Dr. Samantha Blickhan will collaborate with an award-winning interdisciplinary team to throw open the pages of the early African American press through the power of community and AI.
