Moment Energy is continuing to raise the bar for second-life battery storage. The Canadian cleantech company has become the first globally to achieve UL 60730-1 functional safety certification for a battery management system designed specifically for repurposed EV batteries. According to cofounder and CTO Gabriel Soares, the milestone helps prove that repurposed batteries can match purpose-built storage on safety, reliability, and performance—giving customers, battery OEMs, automakers, utilities, and regulators more confidence to deploy second-life systems in critical infrastructure. The certification follows a busy stretch for Moment Energy, including a $40 million Series B led by Evok Innovations and plans for what cofounder and CEO Edward Chiang has described as the world’s largest battery repurposing facility in Surrey. https://lnkd.in/gxc4dW5z

Moment Energy is turning retired EV batteries into critical clean energy infrastructure. The Vancouver-founded company is building what it says will become the world’s largest battery repurposing facility in Surrey, B.C., with the site expected to be complete and fully operational by the end of June 2026. Announced by Co-Founder and CEO Edward Chiang at Web Summit Vancouver, the new facility will accelerate production of second-life battery energy storage systems for data centres, industrial customers, utilities, hospitals, factories, and microgrids. The project comes just weeks after Moment closed a US$40 million Series B round, bringing total capital raised to more than US$100 million. Canada’s climate capital community came together in Vancouver this week with a clear message: climate and hard tech companies are not just being built here — they are scaling. The inaugural Canadian Climate Capital Summit brought together investors, founders, and ecosystem leaders from across the country for what organizers called the largest gathering of Canada’s climate and hard tech capital allocators. Hosted by Renewal Funds, Pangaea Ventures, Evok Innovations, Active Impact Investments, and NorthX Climate Tech, the summit featured Matthew Griffin ● المستقبلي, a discussion on the state of climate VC in Canada, founder presentations from ten scaling companies, and a closing conversation on major exits featuring Carbon Engineering and ecobee. Companies on stage included Summit Nanotech, CO280, Jetson, Maia Farms, Moment Energy, pH7 Technologies, Rodatherm Energy Corporation, Cascadia Windows & Doors, Tidal Vision, and NESI — offering proof points across critical minerals, carbon management, electrification, energy storage, food security, sustainable materials, industrial decarbonization, and circular systems. Canada is putting new capital behind clean agtech innovation. The federal government has earmarked up to $30 million over two years through the Agricultural Clean Technology Program Research and Innovation Stream to support six nonprofit organizations helping Canadian agriculture adopt and scale cleaner technologies. The recipients are Bioenterprise Canada, the Canadian Agri-Food Automation & Intelligence Network, the Canadian Food Innovation Network, MaRS Discovery District, Ontario Genomics, and Zone Agtech. The funding is designed to flow through these organizations to support research, innovation, and commercialization across Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector. Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister heath macdonald says the investment will help innovators develop and scale clean technologies that keep farms competitive while supporting environmental outcomes. Danielle Martin, Member of Parliament for University–Rosedale, also highlighted the importance of collaboration between technology creators and the businesses that use these solutions. Light House is taking aim at one of Canada’s biggest climate opportunities: the built environment. The Vancouver-based organization has launched Bluprint, which it describes as Canada’s first national business accelerator dedicated to sustainable construction. Buildings account for roughly 13% of Canada’s direct greenhouse gas emissions, a figure that rises to nearly 30% when construction and materials are included. At the same time, Light House sees sustainable construction as a $50 billion market opportunity. Bluprint is designed to help close the gap between innovation and adoption by supporting companies working on low-carbon, resilient, and circular construction solutions. Backed by PacifiCan and building on Light House’s Circular Construction Accelerator, the program connects companies with developers, contractors, public sector partners, investors, and industry experts to help them gain traction in real-world projects. The Ocean Startup Project | Projet Startup Des Océans is widening the network behind Canada’s next wave of ocean innovation. The organization has launched the second round of Amplify, its collaborative commercialization program for high-potential Canadian ocean technology ventures. Through Amplify, startups can access up to $25,000 to support pilot projects, customer demonstrations, early deployments, field trials, equipment, materials, and travel tied to commercialization. This round brings together Ocean Startup Project’s largest partner network yet, including 2 Degrés, COAST, COVE, Foresight Canada, Genesis, Invest Nova Scotia, Marine Institute of Memorial University’s The Launch, Cycle Momentum, Emera ideaHUB, and Vimy Forge. As Ocean Startup Project Executive Director Paula Mendonça notes, collaboration is what helps ocean founders move from validation to adoption—connecting startups with customers, partners, and real-world testing opportunities. Vancouver cleantech is finding a place at the centre of Europe’s battery materials buildout. NORAM Electrolysis Systems Inc., known as NESI, has begun construction with Vulcan Energy on the Central Lithium Plant at Infraserv Industrial Park Höchst in Frankfurt, Germany. The facility is part of Vulcan’s Lionheart Project and will use NESI’s proprietary NORSCAND electrolysis technology to convert lithium chloride into battery-quality lithium hydroxide monohydrate, a critical material used in electric vehicle batteries. For NESI CEO Jeremy Moulson, the project is a major validation of the company’s role in scaling cleaner electrochemical infrastructure. For Vulcan Energy CEO Cris M., it marks a defining moment for the European battery value chain.
