Excited to announce Cartwheel's partnership with Maricopa County's Department of Public Health to expand school-based mental health access countywide. Family engagement in student mental health isn't about outreach volume — it's about trust, access, and meeting families where they are. Jillian Kelton, M.Ed, Cartwheel's Director of District Engagement, has spent her career helping districts build stronger partnerships with families. In her latest piece, she shares the three most common barriers that get in the way — and the practical strategies that actually move the needle. From the language districts use to make support feel approachable, to the role of trusted community messengers, to how telehealth removes real-world logistics barriers — this is a concrete, compassionate guide for any district ready to strengthen family partnerships. When a student struggles academically, most districts respond with data-driven interventions and weekly progress monitoring. When they struggle with anxiety, the response is often reactive—even though both directly impact the accountability metrics districts are evaluated on. Adrian Talley, Ed.D. (Superintendent, Indian Prairie SD 204) and Jillian Kelton, M.Ed (former Chief of Student Support, Boston Public Schools) are discussing how to close that gap. Decatur Public School District started with a 46% chronic absenteeism rate and a mental health system that made families wait months for care. By partnering with Cartwheel and reframing family engagement as a shared responsibility—not a compliance strategy, chronic truancy dropped from 51% to 15% and expulsions fell from 36 to just 5.
