  • The Oregonian is looking for a breaking news editor. Are you their ideal candidate? See below.

Who wants to be my editor? The Oregonian / OregonLive.com is looking for an editor to lead the heart of the newsroom: the breaking news team. The ideal candidate brings urgency and ambition to a team that includes journalists at the start of their careers and seasoned ones like me and Maxine Bernstein. We’re eager to work for someone who knows how to hustle, possesses a voracious appetite for news and storytelling and wants to help shape enterprise stories that Portlanders will talk about over coffee and beers. This team churns out news big and small. Volatile demonstrations at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in South Portland that drew national media attention? We’re on it. A deep dive into an embattled judge’s feud with the DA? Done. Investigating explosive allegations of sexual abuse and harassment by a local business executive? Check. A heroic cat named Fred who saved his human companion from a fire? We’ve got it covered. We’re a high-metabolism team but we also want to help readers make sense of the news with smart weekenders and longer-range enterprise. We’re looking for a top-flight line editor who can problem-solve public records challenges, brainstorm creative approaches to stories and collaborate with our colleagues on the social and visuals teams to promote our work. The person who lands this gig is one lucky journalist. If any of this sounds like a  great way to spend your work hours, please apply. And reach out with any questions: ncrombie@oregonian.com Read more and apply: https://lnkd.in/gADzw4re

  • Thank you, Mattea Vecera, for experimenting with creative AI-driven solutions for the communities we serve - and for sharing your success with the team!

A profoundly wise, Packers-loving Newhouse professor once told me: people fear the things they don’t understand. As a journalism student preparing to enter the job market during the age of AI, that fear felt very real just two years ago. So instead of avoiding it, I dug in to understand how AI fits into responsible journalism (and have since become one of the most enthusiastic adopters / experimenters with these tools in our newsroom). On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to speak at our company-wide Advance Local meeting about one of several AI projects I’ve collaborated on to streamline how we do our very important work. Over the past year, I’ve been working with David Cohn on an AI-powered workflow that helps the Staten Island Advance/SILive.com produce a weekly Staten Island weekend events roundup. What used to take nearly a full day of manual work now takes about an hour, without sacrificing editorial judgment or quality. I’ve also been able to extend this reporting to social platforms, turning the roundup into timely videos that drive engagement and traffic back to our website. It’s just one of many great examples of how AI can support local journalism, freeing up time for further storytelling and service. I’m grateful to be part of this work and excited to keep experimenting with tools that help us better serve our readers!

  • Thanks Lily Zuckerman for spending the day with us and sharing your experience!

Newhouse student Lily Zuckerman got an inside look at how @Advance Local is using AI across more than 20 newsrooms and brought back lessons that go far beyond the classroom. Zuckerman was among 18 Newhouse students who attended Advance Local's AI in the Newsroom workshop at syracuse.com's downtown Syracuse office, where she learned firsthand how AI tools like Reporter Toolkit are helping journalists streamline tasks, cover more ground and produce content across multiple formats without replacing the reporters behind the stories. The Oregonian / OregonLive.com is hiring a sports editor — at one of the most interesting times to cover sports in the city. This editor will oversee coverage of a brand-new WNBA team, new ownership of the Portland Trail Blazers, the emergence of one of the world's most exciting women's sports markets, a push for a Major League Baseball team — not to mention the Oregon Ducks, the Oregon State Beavers and high school sports. • Congratulations, Lea! The future is bright! 🎓

I’m excited to share that I’ve officially completed my Master of Science in Strategic Communications at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. This experience strengthened my ability to think strategically, communicate effectively, and apply these skills in real-world settings. Balancing graduate study alongside hands-on professional experience in the marketing industry made the journey especially impactful. I’m grateful for the guidance of my professors, the support of my peers, and the opportunity to grow throughout this program. I’m also incredibly thankful to my company Advance Local for supporting my continued education and making this opportunity possible. Proud to now be part of the Newhouse alumni network! 🍊
