🌾 How can we produce food while protecting biodiversity? In this Earth Fellows project, Dr Alfred Gathorne-Hardy and PhD student Daisy Martinez worked with Earth Fellow Beth Pottle to explore the evidence for alternative approaches to agriculture that can deliver both food and biodiversity outcomes. By mapping existing research, the team is building a clearer picture of what we know and where the gaps are, creating a foundation for future work in this space. The Edinburgh Earth Initiative supports projects like this by funding a postgraduate or PhD Earth Fellow to work with you for 9 hours a week over 9 months, bringing dedicated time and momentum to your research. Metzger and Earth Fellow Alys Daniels-Creasey worked with environmental NGOs across Scotland to identify the knowledge gaps facing practitioners and help make research more relevant and usable on the ground. 🌍 Call for Proposals: Earth Fellows 2026/27 The Edinburgh Earth Initiative (EEI) is now accepting proposals for Earth Fellows research projects for the 2026/27 academic year. We’re inviting academics to put forward climate and environment research ideas that a postgraduate or PhD student can work on for 9 hours a week over 9 months —with the student fully funded by EEI. This is an opportunity to expand your team’s capacity while developing impactful research that can lead to further funding and long-term collaboration. Projects must bring together academics from two or more Colleges, encouraging interdisciplinary thinking and new perspectives. EEI will support you throughout the process, from shaping the project brief to recruiting, onboarding and managing your student fellow.
