Om oss

EU Agency The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established in 2005. It is an EU agency which aims to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious diseases. It is seated in Stockholm, Sweden. Our Mission: To identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by communicable diseases. Further to this, the ECDC works to provide timely information to the European Commission, the Member States, Community agencies and international organisations active within the field of public health. In order to achieve this mission, ECDC works in partnership with national health protection bodies across Europe to strengthen and develop continent-wide disease surveillance and early warning systems. By working with experts throughout Europe, ECDC pools Europe's health knowledge to develop authoritative scientific opinions about the risks posed by current and emerging infectious diseases. • Check out the SMART toolkit, a new resource for communication on antibiotic resistance 👉🏽 https://smart.le.ac.uk/ The toolkit was developed based on social and behavioural research - and with input from our community at the ECDC Lighthouse! The ECDC Lighthouse is a community of practice promoting social and behavioural research for the prevention of infectious diseases. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/dNgCfuyV #SMARTMetaphors #SocialSciences #PublicHealth Learn more about the toolkit ⬇️

I’m passionate about research impact that goes beyond academic audiences. 🧰 So I’m particularly excited to share the SMART Toolkit (Strategic Metaphors for Antibiotic Resistance Toolkit) – a practical, research-informed resource to support better communication about antibiotic resistance. 💡 Drawing on our analysis of how metaphors are currently used in public discourse, alongside a recent Delphi study with #AMR communication experts, we’ve developed a flexible toolkit that brings 38 metaphor-based health messages to life. The result? Accessible, ready-to-use materials designed to help public health communicators engage audiences more effectively – and support more informed decisions about antibiotic use. 🌟 You can access the toolkit here: https://smart.le.ac.uk/ 🌟 The toolkit features: - A library of ready-made metaphor posters for easy download - Templates to adjust existing metaphor posters, for example by adding language translations or targeting messages to specific audiences - AI prompts that allow communicators to produce additional brand-aligned graphics, which may be added to existing posters. 💬Please share and join the conversation! The toolkit is free to use – if you post about it, please use #SMARTMetaphors. Feedback via the website is welcome – we can’t wait to hear from you! 👥Thanks to all project collaborators, who helped to make this happen. A special shout-out also to Jonny Prest and his team from Seed Creativity, who did a fabulous job on the graphic design!

  • Cases of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Shigella infections are increasing in Europe, highlighting growing concerns around antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Since 2023, more than 2 300 infections linked to seven distinct resistant Shigella clusters have been reported in Europe and the United States, particularly among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men. 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘅 - 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 With the summer travel season, festivals and Pride events approaching, ECDC is encouraging awareness, early diagnosis and prevention efforts. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to consider sexually transmitted Shigella in patients presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms, carry out antimicrobial susceptibility testing when indicated, and support surveillance and genomic sequencing activities. 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿! Preventive measures such as avoiding sexual activity when experiencing diarrhoea or gastrointestinal symptoms, practising good hygiene, and seeking medical care for severe or persistent illness can help reduce transmission.
