𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚; 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. This discussion took centre stage at the Bioeconomy Africa Summit in Nairobi, where Dr. Malle Fofana, Deputy Executive Director and Head of Green Growth Implementation at the Global Green Growth Institute, emphasized that Africa’s opportunity lies not in exporting raw commodities, but in building higher-value industries across agro-processing, biomanufacturing, bio-based materials, and green industrialization. In a video message, Dr Malle underscored that Africa already possesses the foundations to lead this transition: the world’s richest natural capital, a young and entrepreneurial population, expanding innovation ecosystems, and the market opportunities created through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat (AfCFTA. What is needed now is deliberate action, a stronger financing architecture, and implementation systems capable of translating ambition into investment. Dr Malle highlighted the need to accelerate Africa’s bioeconomy transition by strengthening value-added industries, scaling climate and nature finance through bankable investment pipelines, and building sustainable finance systems aligned with Africa’s development priorities. He also emphasized the importance of aligning bioeconomy strategies with Agenda 2063, national green industrialization agendas & NDCs to drive coherent and impactful implementation. Contributing to the dialogue on mobilising climate, nature, and trade finance for bioeconomy development, Nagnouma Kone, Manager, Africa Strategy and Partnership & Head of GGGI Kenya Office, reinforced a critical challenge facing the continent: 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲; 𝐢𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐩𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞. She underlined the need to move beyond fragmented financing approaches and focus on building implementation ecosystems that connect project preparation, blended finance, de-risking instruments, investor engagement, and institutional coordination around the real needs of SMEs, producers, and agricultural value chains. Drawing from initiatives such as SAFE, WAICSA in West Africa, support to Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Green Economy, and MAPBIO in Colombia, she highlighted how GGGI continues to support countries and enterprises in structuring, de-risking, and connecting climate-smart investments to financing partners. These experiences demonstrate the importance of blended finance, stronger upstream preparation, and financing ecosystems built around how businesses and value chains actually function.

The Lemelson Foundation believes that invention is the engine of progress. We focus on Impact Inventing — supporting inventors and innovators whose work is environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, and financially sustainable. This is why we're excited by the growing momentum of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), a key force in translating green growth theory into actionable, in-country development. GGGI's mission is to champion a global transition toward green growth that simultaneously achieves poverty reduction, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. Their systematic approach, which links policy, green investment, and project implementation across areas like Climate & Green Finance and the Circular Bioeconomy, creates the robust ecosystem necessary for transformative change. Maggie Flanagan was excited to connect with members of the GGGI team this week while in #Nairobi, #Kenya. The Republic of Kenya's recent accession as GGGI's 50th Member State is a major milestone, solidifying the country's dedication to green industrialization. GGGI's current project in Kenya, aimed at catalyzing green investment into the Green Hydrogen Industry, is exactly the type of forward-thinking initiative that unlocks new economic pathways. This synergy between policy leadership and investment in sustainable technology is how we turn climate threats into opportunities for global economic resilience and equity. 👏 Learn more about GGGI at https://gggi.org/. #ImpactInventing #GreenGrowth #ClimateAction #Kenya #GGGI #InnovationForGood
