At the ITS Congresses, The Smart Mobility Summit of Cities and Regions creates a space for mobility leaders to come together to discuss shared mobility challenges and ambitions through dedicated roundtable discussions. The Smart Mobility Summit of Cities and Regions brought together Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Councillors and Heads of Transport from 33 cities and regions across Europe, alongside national and European policymakers, to discuss the ‘ITS agenda for liveable, resilient and prosperous urban nodes’. What stood out throughout the Summit was the shared commitment to shaping mobility systems that are not only smarter and more connected, but also more people-centred, resilient and sustainable. With cities and regions increasingly acting as orchestrators of complex mobility ecosystems, discussions focused on automation, electrification, multimodal hubs and the societal dimensions of mobility transformation. From 27–29 April 2026, the 17th ITS European Congress brought the ITS community together in Istanbul, Türkiye, for three days of ideas, collaboration, and innovation. ✨A week has passed since the 17th ITS European Congress came to a close, but the discussions and reflections continue to shape conversations across the intelligent transport community. The closing remarks of the Congress highlighted an important reality for the future of mobility: innovation must now translate into deployment at scale. Delivered by CEO Joost VANTOMME (LL.M) and complemented by Chief Rapporteur Professor Eric Sampson’s video address, this final summary provided a consolidated overview of the main outcomes and a preview of the forthcoming Post-Congress Report. 🚗 Safety and resilience through intelligent systems: From Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) and V2X communication to Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), discussions explored how interoperability, smart infrastructure and data-driven safety analysis are shaping the next generation of safer mobility systems. 🚉 Multimodal mobility system management: Sessions highlighted the transition towards integrated mobility ecosystems combining MaaS, AI, digital twins and public-private collaboration, while also emphasising accessibility, affordability and behavioural change as critical factors for successful deployment. 🚚Smart and sustainable logistics in the digital era: The Congress showcased innovations in freight and logistics, including heavy vehicle charging infrastructure, federated data-sharing platforms and autonomous last-mile delivery solutions combining automation with human oversight. ✈️ Enhancing transport and mobility beyond the road: Emerging mobility domains, including VTOL systems and multimodal integration, demonstrated the growing importance of user-centric deployment, societal acceptance and new regulatory approaches for future transport systems.
