Here's how to leverage them effectively 🧵 1/ First, establish KPIs to track for your XR app. Frame rate, GPU utilization, memory usage, load times are all critical metrics. The right tool will monitor these in real-time as users interact with your app. 2/ For VR, aim for a stable 90 FPS to avoid motion sickness. AR apps should target 60 FPS. Monitor frame rates under various conditions (low power mode, heavy usage) to gauge real-world performance. Tools like Intel GPA are ideal for this. 3/ GPU utilization is another key metric, especially for graphics-heavy XR apps. You want the GPU working hard but not constantly maxed out. Tools like Unity Profiler or Unreal Insights identify GPU-intensive areas to optimize. 4/ Memory management is crucial in XR to avoid crashes & stutters. Track memory usage/leaks over time with tools like Visual Studio or Xcode. Look for assets/areas using excessive memory and optimize resource loading. 5/ Don't forget to monitor load times, especially for asset-rich XR apps.     I optimized my project to run 2x faster. This is my GPU frame optimization workflow. I always try to prepare a deterministic benchmark setup, then I use a native GPU profiler to tackle the biggest GPU costs pass-by-pass. I don't optimize games by guessing. This is my frame optimization workflow: 1. I prepare a deterministic benchmark ✔️ The same camera angle ✔️ The same scenario each time ✔️ The same hardware and the same settings ✔️ Reduce the profiling noise: I close all other apps and capture multiple frames 2. I start with the pipeline breakdown ✔ I try to understand what each pass does ✔ I note the time for each pass 3. Iteration loop - for each pass separately ✔ Identify the bottleneck ✔ Change only one thing ✔ Measure again - use the same deterministic benchmark and focus mainly on the passes affected by the change ✔ If quality changed - label as a choice and do it only if needed 🔁 Repeat I used this workflow to optimize my project.     Optimizing for 30+ users in a free-roam VR experience at once is hard. Here's what we've learned from three years of experimenting. 🚀 Don't let all of your players see each other at the same time. Fade out players over distance. Groups like Excurio do this very well. 🚀 Be viciously conservative with material usage. One material for all of your player models: even if they have different skins. UV atlases are your friends here. ❌ Avoid any deforming animations. You've only got so much overhead. Keep the models rigid. ⬇️ Aim for sub 8k poly's per model. Lower if you can. Creating a unique design with these limitations is hard, and it's why we're constantly iterating with new design concepts and optimization tools. Here's a new draft of the character model for our kid-friendly Step Into Webb experience. We like him, but we know we're still a long way off from really solving this problem.
