The fact that AI doesn’t feel transformative to you? That’s not good news for you—or your industry. What you should be asking is this: “Is there already someone out there putting this to good use and achieving a level of productivity that I’ve never reached?” The real disruption happens when just a few people in your field start using AI effectively. They raise my bar for what’s achievable, driving new standards for speed, creativity, and quality. Gone are my days of burning the midnight oil aligning boxes and making powerpoints great at 02:30 the day before an important presentation. 2024 is shaping up to be the year of AI agents. So, what exactly are they, and how do they differ from AI assistants? Let’s start with some context. When ChatGPT made its debut in 2022, it brought AI assistants into the mainstream. These assistants helped users through a back-and-forth process. For example, when using ChatGPT to write code, you’d ask for help, receive a snippet of code, implement it, and repeat until you had the solution. It’s a collaborative process where the AI assists, but the user does most of the planning and execution. Now, enter AI agents—a significant step up. Unlike assistants, AI agents take on much of the planning and execution for you. If you’re working on the same coding project, an AI agent doesn’t just give you pieces of code. Instead, it asks for your end goal—say, developing a financial planning app—and then takes it from there. It will draft a plan, get your approval, and start building everything needed to get the app up and running. That includes writing the code, installing the required software, setting up the database, integrating APIs, and even designing the user interface. It’s not just about helping you along the way; it’s focused on the final outcome. As we enter the world of AI agents, here are some key attributes to keep in mind: • AI agents start with the desired goal. • AI agents plan in advance and craft a multi-step approach. • AI agents leverage tools to get the job done. • AI agents can search the web. • AI agents are “self-healing” and troubleshoot themselves. • AI agents come back to the user (you) for feedback and, in some cases, additional help. • AI agents feel magical. The exciting part? You’re still interacting with AI agents through a familiar prompt-based interface, just like with assistants. But as these agents grow more sophisticated, prompt engineering will continue to be a crucial skill. The way work gets done is evolving rapidly, and AI agents are at the forefront of that shift.

Most of them only teach some gimmicks or tricks you can do with one of the most powerful tools ever... ...they don't teach you how to leverage it to actually save time and make money. After months of experimenting with coding agents, I’ve noticed that while many people use them, there’s little shared guidance on how to get the most out of them. I’ve picked up a few patterns that consistently boost my productivity and code quality. Iterating 2-3 times on a detailed plan with my AI assistant before writing any code has saved me countless hours of rework. Start with a detailed plan—work with your AI to outline implementation, testing, and documentation before coding. Iterate on this plan until it’s crystal clear. Ask your agent to write docs and tests first. This sets clear requirements and leads to better code. Create an "AGENTS.md" file in your repo. It’s the AI’s university—store all project-specific instructions there for consistent results. Control the agent’s pace. Ask it to walk you through changes step by step, so you’re never overwhelmed by a massive diff. Let agents use CLI tools directly, and encourage them to write temporary scripts to validate their own code. This saves time and reduces context switching. First use case: Competitor’s analysis in a single prompt. We gave it a task: “Research the websites of Notion, Coda, and Confluence. Extract their product positioning, core features, pricing plans, and ideal customer segments. Then create a comparative analysis report and a 5-slide PowerPoint deck. Each slide should focus on one insight: pricing comparison, feature set, value prop contrast.” • It visited and navigated competitor websites • Selected and structured relevant insights • Corrected and refined its output • Delivered a source-cited report • Generated a clean, formatted PowerPoint slide ready to print or share Time taken? Under 20 minutes. It’s powerful. But not without its risks, expecially if you are giving the Agent autonomy to execute tasks like, fill out online forms or make purchases: →Minimize exposure of sensitive credentials or payment data. Use secure API keys or temporary tokens, never share core credentials directly. →Set clear limits in your prompt. Treat it like onboarding a new assistant. Provide strict boundaries and ask to include human in the loop →Test in safe environments. Use sandboxed accounts or dummy data when exploring unfamiliar workflows. →Always review outputs.
