The curriculum offers multiple modules that allow you to choose the specific area within robotic systems that aligns with your interests and career goals. The UGC’s new initiative aligns perfectly with the principles of learner-centric education, offering students the flexibility to progress at their own pace without compromising learning outcomes. ✅ ADP (Accelerated Degree Programme): For high achievers who can handle additional credits per semester, shortening their degree duration. ✅ EDP (Extended Degree Programme): For students who prefer a reduced credit load per semester, extending their timeline while ensuring mastery of concepts. 📌 OBE-Centric Features: Students can opt for ADP or EDP after their 1st or 2nd semester based on their learning curve. Institutions will evaluate applications to ensure students meet the required credit and competency benchmarks. Degrees will reflect the modified duration but retain equal academic and employment value. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a bold step by introducing flexible degree programs—a concept I’ve long advocated. This approach shifts the focus from rigid timelines to the completion of credits, empowering students to tailor their academic journeys. However, its success requires significant changes to university academic administration systems. The Shift in Focus: Credits Over Time The essence of this change is prioritizing credit completion over fixed timelines. Universities must move beyond the “fixed courses per semester” model, offering all courses every semester. Students should have the flexibility to take courses at their own pace, and the same course should be accessible to students across years and disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary learning. The Per-Credit Fee Model Flexibility in learning demands flexibility in fees. Universities need to transition from semester-based fees to a per-credit fee model. This ensures students only pay for the credits they take, making education more affordable and accessible. Seamless Course Registration Flexibility also requires robust course registration systems. Each semester, students must plan their schedules based on academic goals and course availability. To support this, universities must establish: Advisory Support: Assign advisors to guide students in course selection. Technology Infrastructure: Implement an online course registration platform to manage diverse schedules. Rethinking Academic Administration This shift is not just structural but cultural. Faculty must adapt to teaching diverse cohorts of students, and course schedules need reimagining to balance faculty resources with student demand. Challenges and Opportunities While challenging, this transition empowers students, enhances interdisciplinary collaboration, and makes education more inclusive. Universities that adapt quickly will set benchmarks for the future. The Road Ahead The UGC’s decision to embrace flexibility is a landmark moment.
