In a quality improvement study across 6 U.S. health systems with 263 ambulatory clinicians, just 30 days of using an ambient AI scribe was associated with: • Burnout dropping from 51.9% to 38.8% (≈74% lower odds) • Lighter cognitive task load (−2.64 on a 10-point scale) • More undivided attention for patients (+2.05) • Less after-hours charting (−0.90 hours/week) • Improved urgent access (more ability to add patients when needed) Bottom line: Ambient AI documentation isn’t just a tech novelty. Clinicians using ambient AI scribes for 30 days reported significantly less burnout, lower cognitive task load, and reduced after-hours documentation time. 1️⃣ Burnout dropped from 51.9% to 38.8%, a 74% lower adjusted odds of burnout. 2️⃣ Note-related cognitive task load fell by 2.64 points on a 10-point scale, less mental demand, rush, and effort. 3️⃣ Time spent documenting after hours decreased by nearly 1 hour per week. 4️⃣ Focused attention on patients improved by 2.05 points. Clinicians felt more present during visits. 5️⃣ Clinicians said patient notes were more understandable, suggesting better communication of care plans. 6️⃣ More clinicians felt they could add an urgent patient to the schedule. A small but notable gain in capacity. 7️⃣ Gains were seen across specialties. Family medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, and adult specialties showed the largest burnout drops. 8️⃣ Academic and medical group-employed clinicians benefited most, especially those practicing 10 to 15 years. 9️⃣ The tool's impact showed up across a range of prior documentation habits. Exciting to see that the benefits of Ambient AI scribes appear to be consistent across different health systems, provider types and patient populations. In our multicenter study of the Abridge platform including 263 physicians and advance practice practitioners across 6 health care systems, we found that after 30 days with an ambient AI scribe, burnout among those working in ambulatory clinics decreased significantly from 51.9% to 38.8%. Generative AI (Gen AI) is a powerful ally in supporting patients and providers. At CenterWell, we’re not just adopting technology for technology’s sake; we’re thinking about how to leverage AI to address real-world challenges in health care, such as physician burnout. Our ambient dictation tool is one use case that has improved satisfaction and engagement at appointments from patients and providers, which is why we’ve continued to scale the program across our primary care centers. Jason Couch, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, one of our providers testing ambient dictation, had this to say about the tool: “A positive outcome is the patient summary. I’ve had patients request I use this technology in follow-up visits, because of the patient summary I’m able to provide to them. The entire note is broken down, so they understand what we did during the appointment, what was the problem, and what are the changes I want them to make. It’s also had a positive impact on my documenting. I’m able to give patients the face-to-face visit they truly need.
