Electronic health records hold critical information, but finding what matters can be overwhelming. Chart Hero, a solution being developed by Penn Medicine's Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation, uses AI to synthesize patient data across many components (images, scanned documents, notes, summaries, and more) and present it for clinician review. By simplifying data navigation, Chart Hero empowers health care practitioners to spend less time searching and more time caring for patients. Reimagining Care Penn Medicine and Independence Blue Cross are using clinical informatics to speed up care. A new EHR-based authorization tool now approves 83% of outpatient imaging requests in one-tenth the usual time — while reducing low-value scans by 9%. Real workflow change, real patient impact. #ClinicalInformatics #PennMedicine #CAHI #HealthTech

A strong finish to Day 3 at #CIC2025 for Penn Medicine and the Center for Applied Health Informatics (CAHI)! We were proud to showcase our collaborative work in today’s session: “EMR Integrated Clinical Pathways: A Rapidly Iterative, Experimental Approach for Learning Health Systems.” Joy Iocca presented on behalf of both CAHI and the Center for Evidence-Based Practice (CEP), highlighting how Penn Medicine is operationalizing the Learning Health System (LHS) model through real-time, EMR-integrated clinical pathways. Key highlights: • 17 clinical pathways implemented in one year • 2,648 providers engaged • Over 28,000 total pathway uses • Enabled real-time guidance, outcome tracking, and clinician feedback This work represents a scalable, high-impact model for embedding evidence-based practice directly into clinical workflows. Congratulations to the full author team: Emilia Flores, PhD; John McGreevey, MD; Carly Gartner, PA-C; Susan Harkness Regli, PhD; Nikhil Mull, MD #LearningHealthSystem #ClinicalPathways #CDS #HealthInformatics #PennMedicine #CAHI #CEP #CIC25 #EvidenceBasedPractice #AppliedHealthInformatics

Day 2 at #AMIACIC featured a standout presentation from Penn Medicine’s own Asaf Hanish, MPH! “Adoption and Utility: Evaluation of Usage Rate and Editing Overlap for Artificial Intelligence-Drafted Replies to Patient Messages” explored how generative AI can support clinical communication by drafting responses to patient portal messages. Key takeaways from the session: • Penn Medicine’s collaboration with Epic on Augmented Response Technology (ART) enables AI-generated draft replies to ease clinician burden. • Real-world data revealed wide variation in usage and editing behaviors across providers. • Asaf shared insights on aligning AI tools with clinical workflows and emphasized the importance of thoughtful implementation. A timely and data-driven exploration of AI’s role in healthcare communication—great work, Asaf! #HealthInformatics #AIinHealthcare #PatientCommunication #ClinicalInnovation #PennMedicine #GenerativeAI #EHR #AMIA2025 #CIC25

Kicking off Day 1 at #AMIACIC with incredible work from the Penn Medicine community! Two standout posters on display: 1. “coordn8: Transforming medical records processing with AI” – presented by Jency Daniel, DNP, MSN, RN from the Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation (CHTI). This work showcases how AI can reduce workforce burden, streamline medical records workflows, and improve care coordination. 2. “Creation of a Novel, Multicenter Neonatal Clinical Decision Support Rounding Tool” – presented by Ozzie Mercado, MD and Alex Ruan, MD, CHOP Informatics Fellow. Their project highlights the power of collaborative clinical design in improving neonatal rounding and standardizing care across institutions. It’s inspiring to see such impactful, clinician-led innovation driving real change. Looking forward to the rest of the week at #AMIACIC! #HealthInformatics #AIinHealthcare #ClinicalInnovation #PennMedicine #CDS #NeonatalCare #AMIA2025 #HealthcareTransformation #CIC25
