NORTHWEST FLORIDA’S EXTENSIVE ARTIFICIAL REEF SYSTEM SET TO EXPAND WITH THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE R/V DEEP STIM III

A product of a tri-county partnership, this deployment is the second largest in the

region at 239-feet

September 25, 2023 - (OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla.) – Northwest Florida’s extensive artificial reef system continues to expand with the upcoming deployment of R/V DEEP STIM III tentatively scheduled for the week of October 9, 2023 (weather dependent). This new artificial reef project was funded through a Tri-County partnership between the Tourist Development Councils in Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Panama City Beach and Walton County. Emerald Coast Reef Association and South Walton Artificial Reef Association provided funding for additional reef modules to be placed on the deck of the vessel to add complexity to the new site. Coastal Conservation Association provided funds for the towing fees necessary for deployment. The vessel will be placed centrally between the three partnering destinations and allows for the expansion of their collaborative artificial reef programs that attract both recreational divers and anglers from around the world.

“The water surrounding our collective region boasts an abundance of opportunities for fishing and diving activities, so it only makes sense that we work together to protect and grow the unique experiences that set us apart,” says Alex Fogg, Coastal Resource Manager, Destin-Fort Walton Beach. “Collaborative projects like this will open the door for future opportunities that continue to benefit locals, visitors and the environment.”

The R/V DEEP STIM III is a 239-foot-long offshore supply vessel that was used for oil exploration and will be the second largest artificial reef site deployed off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Panama City Beach and Walton County. Once deployed, the vessel will be accessible to a wide range of dive levels as it sits in a range of depths from approximately 70-feet at the top of the wheelhouse to 135-feet at the sand. The majority of the vessel deck will sit at 100-feet, ideal for an advanced dive experience. In addition to diving, the 65-foot high-relief site will provide an outstanding fishing location and provide habitat for popular species like amberjack. The added reef modules enhance the overall habitat and will attract fishing favorites such as grouper and snapper. The vessel will be deployed in the eastern extent of Large Area Artificial Reef Site A approximately 22 NM from Destin East pass, 29 NM from St Andrews Pass and 16.5 NM due south of Walton County.

The partnership between the participating Tourist Development Councils allowed for an investment in the local artificial reef program, which covered fees associated with preparation and deployment. Destin-Fort Walton Beach Panama City Beach, and Walton County Tourism are destinations that foster ecological stewardship and embrace the fishing and diving opportunities provided in the Gulf of Mexico. Artificial reefs are a valuable asset and resource for guests visiting the area, but also a benefit for the local community and fishery.
