When I was looking to shortlist the courses that I wanted to take for the Fall semester, I was amused when I found about the course called ‘Digital Consulting Project’ in Prof. Gaurav Shekhar’s mailer. As it was a new course, I didn’t have any information from the seniors on the class and I was not sure how helpful the course would be. However, Professor has structured the course so well that I was able to understand how the consulting field works and how real-time industry exposure in the USA coupled with academic learning can help me in gaining a whole new perspective of classroom learning.

Out of all the important concepts that were taught in class, I found principles of management consulting or the 4S method to be interesting. It helps us to understand the state of a problem and to identify the main question of discussion. The next step is to structure the problem or split the main question into sub-issues that can be investigated upon. The next step is to actually solve the problem. The last step is to sell the solution to a problem owner.

As part of the capstone project, we worked with LastLine inc. Lastline is a cybersecurity company, which offers AI-powered network security solutions that detect cyber-attacks and malicious network activity. Lastline enables customers to defend their organizations against advanced threats that cause costly data breaches. The goal of my capstone project is to design, develop, and deploy a system that helps Lastline employees.

The Appliance Health Monitoring System consists of three basic modules

1.      Visualizing the status of an appliance,

2.      Automatically finding appliances in error condition,

3.      Notifying the Lastline employees of such error conditions.

The solution’s advantages include :

•      Access to the system through the browser.

•      Display of relevant appliance logs and appliance state

•     Analyze appliance data for errors or anomalies

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Gaurav Shekhar for introducing this course as a part of the curriculum and it has been a great learning experience for me. I would also like to thank our project sponsorers Mr. Brad Bleeck, Mr. Clemens Kolbitsch, Mr. Ryan Knight for giving us much needed guidance and support throughout the course of the project. I would like to thank my fellow team members for building a prototype and in helping me in learning and applying the concepts that were part of the course.
