“It’s like a suitcase that cracks open and the clothes burst out.” That was the moment my husband finally understood what a prolapsed disc was. We were talking about a friend who’d just had surgery for two collapsed discs. I started explaining what it meant anatomically: vertebrae, cushioning, nerves. I could see his shoulders hunch. Too medical - especially for someone who is medically squeamish! But then I said, “Imagine a hard suitcase packed full of clothes. The case cracks open… and all the clothes start to spill out.” And suddenly, he got it. He could see it. No more squirming. No more confusion. Just instant clarity. That’s the power of metaphor. When you’re sharing something complex, like a strategy, a service, or a transformation, you don’t need to dumb it down. But you do need to make it stick. Metaphor provides a shortcut to clarity and memorability. It helps people grasp the unfamiliar by linking it to something they already understand. It creates a picture in their mind that stays with them long after you’ve finished speaking. If you want to be more impactful when you speak, whether that’s on stage, in meetings, or on a podcast, start looking for the suitcase in your story. If they can see it, they’ll remember it. And if they remember it, they’re far more likely to trust you, buy from you, and share what you do with others. What metaphor do you use to explain your work?

How much can classic 'cringe' things convert into something 'cooler'? The emerging resurgence of metal braces may give a sense. 🦷 Despite terms like ‘brace face’ and ‘tinsel teeth’ being traumatic staples of teenage years for many, metal braces may be riding a wave of cultural opportunity vs. invisible alternatives. 🦷 A recent survey by the American Association of Orthodontists shows metal braces, having never really gone away, are back on the rise (77% of treatments are metal, up from 75% in 2022), stealing share from invisible or clear aligners. 🗞️ The New York Times (link in comments) chalks the shift back towards metal braces to several potential factors: 90s nostalgia, ‘grills’ and a turn as a new accessory - but what if something deeper is behind it? More aptly mentioned, the potential to reframe cringe sits squarely behind products like metal branches and pimple patches, famously scaling brands like Starface by allowing teens to own more of a perceived flaw. What if metal braces are benefitting from the same chance to turn cringe into confidence - creating a community of fellow users, making a statement and still pragmatically acknowledging that even the most positive user doesn’t want it forever? 😬 The limits of converting cringe should keep us from making sweeping statements about how younger generations embrace authenticity and positivity. Stories of ‘Sephora Kids’ as young as ten seeking out anti-aging products may seem at odds with a resurgence of obvious orthodontics, but it shows the duality of each of us when it comes to appearance. 🤩 We can simultaneously buy solutions that sell empowerment against unavoidable (pimples) or seemingly necessary (braces) shortcomings, while still showing insecurity more widely. If anything, both address the same base need - confidence in how we show our true selves. Marketers would be careful to assume absolute shifts in culture from stories like this because there are still realistic limitations on what empowerment and converted cringe can do. ⏱️ As an orthodontist in the article mentions, providing caution whenever we talk about ‘converting cringe’, “I see so many kids who are so excited and want braces on ASAP, but if I had a penny for every one of those kids eventually asking me, ‘When am I getting them off?’ I’d be very rich.” #branding #culture #trends

A few months ago, I had heart surgery. Alhamdulillah, I’m recovering well. But in reality: even after recovery, some evenings I’d reach home… empty. Then yesterday, during a session with a master of vibration healing, he said: “Tariq, I can see your light. But your lower abdomen is blocked.” It struck me! That’s exactly why I felt: driven, but drained easily. Here’s what I learned (and what we explored on this week’s Think & Grow 10X): → Stress is not just workload. It’s actually disconnection from your inner self. → Your mind is powerful, but like a child. Don't command it, it needs compassion. → Breathing is your fuel. Breathe in light. Breathe out light. (more on this in the podcast) → Smile on purpose. It opens the heart. It changes the room before it changes the result. → Don’t “fight” negative people. Grow stronger positive energy so you’re not pulled down. I focused on my breath and the practical change that happened was: I went home as a husband and father, but not an exhausted Founder. We unpacked all of this in the episode: Anxiety, burnout, healing, and how leaders can protect their inner system while building big things. 👉Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/d3x4qXYn Curious: Do you also have any ritual to reset before you enter your home in the evening? I’d love to learn from you.
