The “Trieste model” of critical psychiatry has gradually flattened into a hegemonic, medicalized approach. Long-acting treatments are presented as a form of “ghost therapy,” supposedly meant to create space for dialogue and other interventions; more often, however, they end up serving as a way to forget the patient. What is needed is simply a return to Basaglia’s insights: a partial decolonization of the rigid ideal that has become fossilized, while remembering that everything was already — even back then, in the mythical year of 1978 — One (Mental) Health.
