Over the last few years, I think cyber security has shifted from being viewed as a technical problem to becoming a core business conversation. Not just for enterprise organisations either. Cyber resilience is not about stopping every attack. It is about 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗴𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴. For the last few weeks I've been talking all things 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿, the message:  • Cyber risk is a 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸, not an IT problem.  • Technology alone does not create resilience. 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 do.  • If you cannot operate manually for a period, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁.  • 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 amplify risk, good leadership reduces it.  • In OT environments, the stakes are higher. Cyber incidents quickly become 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 through clear ownership, rehearsed scenarios, disciplined architecture and teams who know what to do under pressure. It is not something you buy. It is something you practise. I spent 17 years inside enterprise cyber. The hardest skill was not technical. It was learning how decisions actually get made. Because inside a large enterprise , a cyber decision rarely moves because someone made a technically correct point. I watched good ideas sit still. I watched weaker ideas get funded. I watched teams agree on the risk, agree on the gap, agree on the need, and still fail to move money. That confused me early on. Then I started seeing the pattern. The work only moved when four things lined up: 1. Someone owned the painful consequence. 2. The consequence was close enough to matter. 3. The risk could be explained in business language. 4. The decision had a path through budget, governance, and delivery. ⚠️ That is the part most people miss. In enterprise cyber, being right is the entry ticket. It does not mean the work gets funded. A technically strong control can die because the consequence feels too abstract. A good vendor can stall because the buyer cannot explain why this needs to happen now. A real risk can stay unfunded because the person who feels it is not the person who can move the money. And a startup can spend months pitching a company that "has the problem" without ever reaching the person who personally feels enough pain to act. 💸 That last one matters a lot. If you sell to enterprises, your job is not to find companies with the problem. That is too broad. Your job is to find the decision maker who feels the consequence strongly enough to move budget, pull people into the room, and defend the decision internally. That is a much smaller target. It is also a much better one. The best cyber operators I worked with understood this. They explained more than controls. They explained why waiting was risky, who carried that risk, what changed if nothing moved, and why the timing mattered. That is the skill.
