Hazelnuts, walnuts, and chestnuts thrive in our temperate climate, making them a natural fit for Danish soil. Serious Danish players in agriculture are turning nut cultivation into a new business opportunity — and the flavour potential is just as exciting. Today, most hazelnuts come from Turkey, which accounts for two-thirds of global production. But that could change. Meyers Madhus recently tested locally grown hazelnuts in SEGES Innovation’s project “Nuts with Danish Roots”, supported by the Plant-Based Food Foundation, Landbrugs- og Fiskeristyrelsen. Growth in the Southern Cape fruit sector is something we’ve been watching — and experiencing — up close. When Arisa was still known as South Africa’s only persimmon packhouse, none of us imagined how quickly citrus and avocado production would reshape the region. This season has been a clear reflection of that momentum: 🥑 Last year we packed 846 tons of avocados. With a month still to go, we have already reached 1,838 tons. 🍊 During winter we handled around 16,000 tons of soft citrus which is also set to increase significantly next year. 🥝 And from next year we’ll add the first commercial yellow and red kiwis to our lines. I believe this crop has the same energy we saw in avocados three years ago - says general managerEtienne Brewis. To support this growth, we continue investing in infrastructure: cooling for 8,000 bins, SmartFresh and forced cooling, and expanded dry-goods storage for a smooth flow from arrival to dispatch. It’s an exciting phase for Arisa and for the producers we serve — and we’re building for the future with purpose.

The conditions leading into 2025 created a sense of optimism the tree fruit industry hadn’t felt in years. After a long stretch of weather disasters, market disruptions and lost crops, this spring’s bloom across the Okanagan, Similkameen and Creston valleys promised a return to profitability. We recently spoke with Prawit, whose family has been practicing farming for several generations. He, told us about his experience growing Jasberry Superfood rice since we started our partnership 3 years ago. For many farmers, selling through conventional channels means low and unpredictable prices. As he explained:  “When selling through normal channels, the prices are low but with Jasberry, they’re much fairer and more stable. The prices are much better than what we get in the regular market.” Price stability is a key factor in creating reliable livelihoods. It allows farmers to plan ahead, invest in their farms, and reduce financial risk. Beyond income, he also highlighted another impact we hear often: “We eat it too, and we feel healthier.” For us, this reinforces why we focus on quality-led, organic production. Fair pricing, farmer health, and product quality are closely connected. This is the kind of long-term partnership we aim to build. Hitting the Highs... Stuart Evans is a Welsh dairy farmer proving that organic systems can be extremely effective. Producing around 6,000 litres of organic milk from 120 dairy cows, homegrown forage is essential for feeding his herd. After reseeding in May 2024, Stuart found that paddocks sown with Germinal’s Aber High Sugar Grass (HSG) outgrew the others by 1.2 tonnes of dry matter per hectare from February to April 2025. This represents an increase of 175kg of milk solids monthly. While highly productive, Aber HSG also reduces ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions by helping cows capture more protein from grass.
