How AI is disrupting industries and creating new challenges

I am really concerned about the use of what we loosely call AI these days. And yes, it is loosely called AI. These smart systems show great promise to help people. They've also proven themselves to be of great assistance to fraudsters. Not only are they used for detrimental effect by those who are defrauding creative works like art, writing, coding, and music, but they are now being used by targeted bots to take down legitimate artists or deprive them of revenue. This is kind of disgusting. In the attached video, it is explained how anyone can, for just as low as $20 to $25, create a fake persona and destroy an independent artists income stream. We need tighter regulation about how AI is being used in industry. It is being used by companies who don't want to spend money on employees and being used by people who don't want to put forth effort. Yes, they are valid uses for AI, but I'm talking about all of those that are not valid So don't even bother mentioning the valid uses. We already know them. https://lnkd.in/eFmzb7uc

I think by now, we’ve all heard of The Velvet Sundown (the alleged AI band that racked up thousands of plays on Spotify) but I’m not sure we’ve really understood the significance of what’s happened to the music industry, or what’s about to. Every day we’re faced with new demos and tools, like the recent release of Sora 2, which has flooded the internet with surreal videos of Einstein boxing or Michael Jackson robbing a KFC. Most of these video tools are still early-stage. Fascinating, but years away from posing any real threat to the film industry. With music, however, this is not the case. These models are not experiments anymore. They’re finished products, trained, deployed, and running at full capacity in data centers across the globe. So what does that mean for us? For years, streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and HBO have shifted from licensing to producing their own content. Why? it’s cheaper to own than to rent. Netflix famously paid 100 million dollars for a single year of Friends back in 2018. In-house production seem like the only rational path forward. I’d argue the same shift is now happening in music )or perhaps has already begun). Every major streaming platform has the same incentive: to control not just distribution, but creation itself. With AI bands, platforms like Spotify can generate their own music. Music they fully own, control, and publish. You could even imagine a future where Spotify tailors music uniquely to you, generating songs that exist only in your feed and for your ears? And if you haven’t already heard AI-generated songs on Spotify, that might simply be because you can’t tell them apart anymore. As exciting as this is for the tech optimists, it’s also a hard hit for an industry that’s been fighting streaming platforms for two decades over terrible deals that have squeezed musicians since the start. What was supposed to democratize music distribution mostly ended up benefiting shareholders (and maybe the audience) while the garage bands of the suburbs never really stood a chance at turning their passion into a living wage. That fight they didn’t win. And this next one? They won’t even get to join. That's a conversation for another day. Commercial GenAI's dust will settle eventually. What will remain in arts and culture is an ecosystem even more fragile, facing bigger financial challenges. Platformisation, promises of access and opportunity: we have heard these before in the case of streaming. But streaming and GenAI platforms differ fundamentally in how they produce, distribute, extract and exploit. What is consistent though, is that musicians will bear the brunt. A GEMA-SACEM study projected €2.7 billion in cumulative potential damage for creators in Germany and France alone. Early signals suggest we're witnessing massive economic value transfer from musical workers to AI platform operators and their enterprise clients. Where will we see it first? Places where cost-cutting wins over artistic uniqueness: background music, stock libraries, commercial soundtracks. These are the areas of the gig economy that have sustained the musical ecosystem for a long time. I do not see any other way than intervention. The question is what kind and how fast. Legislation? New licensing frameworks? Universal opt-out rights? Platform liability for training data?

Glad to see Bria AI’s attribution model — which I helped set up — gaining wider traction in the AI training world. The Financial Times reports that Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group are closing a major AI licensing agreement. On the surface, it’s about music. But the real story is bigger: attribution and recurring revenue are quietly becoming the architecture of AI’s economy. When training data stops being treated as “free raw material” and starts being compensated like co-ownership, we move from extraction to participation. That shift doesn’t just pay creators, it redefines the social contract between AI and culture. Here is the FT article: https://lnkd.in/ePXzGwwq #ai #trainingdata #attribution #recurring #copyright #faircompensation
