Professor Lizy John, from The University of Texas at Austin, recently visited INESC TEC during her stay in Portugal under a Fulbright Specialist Award. Hosted in Portugal through a project at the Universidade do Porto, Professor John delivered lectures at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto and met with several INESC TEC research coordinators and researchers, at the invitation of INESC TEC’s Vice-President, Professor Gabriel David. The visit also created an opportunity to strengthen links with the UT Austin Portugal Program community. Professor John is currently hosting Afonso Lourenço, a PhD student selected under the 2025 edition of the Program’s Short-Term Research Internships at UT Austin. Afonso’s work on energy-efficient real-time machine learning aligns closely with Professor John’s research on algorithm-hardware co-design. During her visit, Professor John also met with Afonso’s advisor, Professor Emeritus João Gama, senior researcher at INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support, as well as with last year’s UT Austin Portugal Program scholar Mushahid H. and his advisor Ana Aguiar, from FEUP. We're serious about inspiring innovators 💡promoting #STEM🔬✨ & attracting talent to our sector at all levels. 💡200+ 12-18 year-old students presented at #ESSS their original scientific projects - looking, as Izabela-Maria from EEB Laeken puts it, 💬 "innovative solutions that address some of today's gaps & problems". The event offered the students something invaluable at their age: 💬 "an opportunity to dive deep into research driven by their own curiosity... and communicating findings & defending them in from of an entire scientific community", as Arnaud Jutier, a teacher from EEB Uccle, emphasised. I delivered a talk for EU-CONEXUS about skills development, spotting opportunities and how we can flourish working with, not against AI. EU-CONEXUS is an alliance of 9 European universities that aims to facilitate innovation and interdisciplinary research across borders.

🌟 Why Collaborate with Universities? Insights from Tecan’s Recent Student Visit in Grödig 🌟   Recently we had the pleasure of welcoming 18 students from the Department of Biomedical Analysis at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences at Tecan Austria in Grödig. Organized with Professor Oliver Longin and supported by our colleagues Alina J., Eric L., the visit was a very good example of how industry and academia can work together to inspire and educate the next generation. During their time with us, students experienced an interactive demonstration of the Spark Cyto, Tecan’s live cell imaging platform, and saw firsthand how our solutions are transforming research and diagnostics. They also toured our production facilities, gaining insights into the processes, people, and diverse career paths available at Tecan. These collaborations—whether through site visits, internships, or master thesis projects—are vital for both, companies and universities. They provide students with practical experience and a deeper understanding of real-world applications, while companies benefit from fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and the opportunity to nurture future talent. At Tecan, we are committed to fostering the next generation of scientists and innovators.
