I’m sharing a technical snapshot of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) integration project. This Single Line Diagram (SLD) illustrates the connection into the 20 kV medium voltage (MV) busbar of a 110/20 kV substation. Key Technical Highlights: 🔹 Point of Interconnection (POI): The design ensures a clear demarcation between the BESS facility and the Utility Grid, following strict compliance with grid code requirements. 🔹 Metering & Protection: We’ve implemented a high-precision Revenue Metering Point (cls 0.2s) and a robust protection scheme. Note the use of ABB REF620/615 and REU615 relays for comprehensive feeder and voltage protection. 🔹 Equipment Selection: The integration utilizes vacuum circuit breakers (VD4) and high-accuracy CTs (current transformers) with multiple cores to handle both protection and billing-grade metering. 🔹 BESS Coupling: The system is designed for seamless 20 kV coupling, ensuring voltage stability and frequency response capabilities at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). By optimizing the connection layout and equipment selection, we managed to minimize footprint and CapEx while maintaining maximum operational reliability. We recently installed a 2MW combined heat and power system at an injection moulding company in the North East. They had expanded operations into a 3,000sq ft factory, but there was insufficient power to run the new manufacturing facility. We were contacted at short notice to design and install a combined heat and power system, which involved a 400-metre extension of the existing gas main. Four, 500 kW CHPs were specified to meet existing and future power requirements, which were delivered within 16 weeks from the order being placed. Why is a single 380/150 kV substation becoming critical infrastructure for Belgium’s industrial electrification and low-carbon steel ambitions? Construction of the Baekeland high-voltage substation has officially begun in Ghent, marking a major step in strengthening Belgium’s power grid and supporting large industrial loads in the North Sea Port area. The new facility will serve multiple customers, including ArcelorMittal, and is designed to improve access to high-capacity electricity through a mix of underground cables and overhead lines. A key driver behind the project is ArcelorMittal Belgium’s plan to transition towards electric arc furnace steelmaking, which requires a direct 380 kV grid connection. Following an agreement with transmission system operator Elia Group, the Baekeland substation will provide the capacity that the existing 150 kV connection cannot support, placing grid infrastructure at the centre of industrial decarbonisation. Developed in stages on a 15-hectare site, the project includes 380 kV and 150 kV hybrid substations, phase-shifting transformers and associated equipment, with commissioning targeted for 2030. Baekeland is set to become a strategic hub for both grid resilience and the electrification of energy-intensive industry in Belgium.
