I appreciate the foundational work in the SINTEF-led CircWtE report by Dr. Michael Becidan. Their core finding, that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, resonates profoundly with our reality on the African coast.
In Mombasa, our challenge is not Norway’s, but one defined by rapid urbanisation, an informal waste sector that is a vital economic engine, and the immediate environmental threat to our #blueeconomy.
We can’t just import technologies or policies wholesale; we must forge a contextual circularity. 💡
This means shifting our focus from a singular #wastetoenergy plant to a diversified waste-to-value system.
It’s about recognising the inherent resource in mixed municipal solid waste and designing infrastructure that is appropriate to local feedstock, rather than forcing the feedstock to fit the technology.
Our policy framework here is designed to formalise and support the very citizens who are the frontline of our sorting and recovery efforts, the women and youth in the informal waste economy.
We have moved beyond aggregated indicators to multidimensional metrics that capture the social, economic, and climate co-benefits of our decentralised materials recovery facilities.
Policy, for us, is an act of empowerment and validation. ⤵️
It’s about making sure that the residual ash, the processing rejects, and the collected data all feed back into a transparent, self-improving system.
The report’s emphasis on "what if" scenarios is crucial. We use scenario planning to model the consequences of public behaviour and policy change, ensuring our climate-smart infrastructure investments are resilient and future-proofed against economic shifts.
The road to circularity in #Africa is paved by practical innovation and deep, local governance. It starts with validating the small, community-driven successes that, when aggregated, redefine national progress.
How are other coastal cities translating global circularity frameworks into operationally savvy, citizen-focused results? Share your insights on place-based innovation.
