During our fireside chat last week, Jay A. Schwarz, Space Bureau Chief at the Federal Communications Commission, shared a powerful personal anecdote that highlights the true value of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) services. Even as a telecom leader, he faced the realities of the digital divide firsthand when his family moved to a rural farm in 2019: “I actually would drive and sit in my truck outside of the local library and use the Wi-Fi... And then eventually we did get a LEO service, which was really a game changer.” LEO satellite technology is reshaping rural connectivity, proving itself to be the critical infrastructure needed to close gaps that traditional networks can't reach. Towards supporting Greece's National Satellite Space Project, Planet Labs Germany has entered a 2-year, 7-figure agreement with the Greek government to expand the downstream pillar of the Greek Small Satellite Program into a full-scale operational contract. Greek government institutions will subsequently gain access to over a decade of PlanetScope imagery, high-resolution tasking capabilities and Planet’s Professional Services team, in addition to numerous data offerings, including near-daily medium-resolution imagery.

FCC Grants AST SpaceMobile Direct-to-Device Authority The authorization enables AST SpaceMobile to deploy and operate an NGSO constellation of up to 248 satellites to deliver Supplemental Coverage from Space (SCS) directly to unmodified mobile devices across the United States, using premium low-band spectrum – 700 MHz and 800 MHz – which offers superior penetration and coverage characteristics, in coordination with its mobile network operators strategic partners Verizon, AT&T, and FirstNet.
