We recently worked with the team at InterDigital, Inc. to create a white paper focused on Pixel Value Reduction (PVR) technology. It is designed to significantly cut energy consumption on screen-based devices such as smartphones, tablets and TVs without compromising the user experience. This has never been more important, given that global video consumption is scaling to unprecedented levels, now accounting for nearly 69% of all internet traffic. This means it is more important than ever to balance the demand for high-resolution content with the urgent need for greater environmental sustainability. You can download the report, which was authored by Ben Wood, FDM CCS Insight’s CMO and Chief Analyst here: https://lnkd.in/eYqDCm3h Valérie Allié, Lionel Oisel, Roya Stephens, Anthony Stumpo

People often assume “assistive technology” has to look specialist, medical, or purpose-built. I increasingly think the opposite is true. Some of the most effective technology for supporting independence, reassurance, safety, routine and quality of life is already sitting on shop shelves marketed to everyone else. Motion sensors. Smart lighting. Voice assistants. Environmental monitoring. Door and window sensors. Smart doorbells. Smartphones. Automated routines. Smart locks. Smart vacuum cleaners. Air quality monitoring. None of these products were necessarily designed exclusively for care environments. Yet in the right setup, they can quietly remove friction from everyday life for so many people. That matters. Mainstream smart technology has another advantage: innovation moves faster. Consumer technology markets evolve at incredible speed compared to many traditional assistive technology sectors. Better hardware, lower prices, improved reliability, stronger ecosystems and more intuitive experiences arrive constantly because millions of people are using the products every day. Of course, there’s an important distinction here. Mainstream smart technology should never be positioned as a guaranteed substitute for regulated care, emergency response services or specialist clinical systems where those are genuinely required. But there is huge value in recognising how mainstream technology can complement independence, wellbeing and day-to-day living in practical, accessible ways. Sometimes the best “assistive” technology doesn’t announce itself as assistive at all.

𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 Monitoring the condition of buildings and infrastructure is essential for safety and longevity. However, traditional inspections can be time-consuming, costly, and sometimes limited by site access. At LSY Engineering Consultants Ltd., we are exploring how everyday technology — including smartphones — could help complement conventional structural monitoring. Modern smartphones contain powerful sensors such as 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐠𝐲𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬. When combined with data collection platforms, these devices have the potential to detect patterns such as unusual vibrations, movement, or early indicators of structural distress. This approach could allow wider coverage across structures, provide earlier insights into potential issues, and enable more continuous monitoring using technology people already carry. While crowdsourced data will never replace professional inspections, it can act as an additional layer of information to support engineers in identifying risks earlier and making better-informed decisions. As 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 continue to evolve, crowdsourced monitoring may become an important tool in the future of structural health management. #StructuralEngineering #SmartInfrastructure #DigitalEngineering #SmartCities #InnovationInEngineering
