#TopInnovativeClusters
Stockholm now sits at 32nd globally among the world's Top 100 Innovation Clusters, having climbed 7 places, and ranks 11th by innovation density per resident, placing 3rd in the EU behind only Helsinki and Eindhoven.
So who actually contributed to this?
On patents, Ericsson alone accounts for 48% of all international (PCT) patent filings in the cluster (2,860 patents over five years), keeping Stockholm anchored in 5G, telecom, and digital communications. The surprise is the runner-up: Huawei is Stockholm's #2 patent filer at 8%, a reflection of its long-standing R&D presence in Kista. Scania rounds out the top three with heavy vehicle innovation.
On science, Karolinska Institutet leads with 32% of the cluster's scientific output (6,248 articles), powering life sciences and medical research. KTH Royal Institute of Technology contributes 24% in engineering and applied tech, and Stockholms universitet adds 16% across natural and social sciences.
On capital, 1,794 venture capital (VC) deals translate into a 0.76% global share from a metro of just 2.16 million people. The Spotify, Klarna, and Northvolt lineage is no longer anecdotal, but measurable in the flow of deals.
And this isn't an isolated hub. 40% of Stockholm's patents are co-invented with partners in Lund, Malmö, Göteborg, and Uppsala. 77% of its scientific articles are co-authored, with top collaborators including Uppsala, London, and Amsterdam. Stockholm sits inside a Nordic and European network, not on its own.
Looking forward to GII 2026: with global VC down 4.4% in 2024 and concentrating in US AI megadeals, the question is whether European hubs can hold their per resident innovation density. Stockholm's diversification across telecom, life sciences, advanced technology, and climate tech is its safety net.
