Job Description
The Post Oak Group is seeking a Managing Director, Investment Banking (Venture Capital Coverage) to lead and expand our venture capital coverage across our Lower Middle Market Capital Markets and M&A advisory practice. This senior leadership role is responsible for bringing established, portable, and currently active venture capital relationships that will directly participate in live capital raises ranging from Pre-Seed through Series C, as well as venture-backed M&A transactions.
This is a relationship-driven role focused on activating direct venture capital, increasing partner-level participation in transactions, and providing our issuers with differentiated access to lead investors, follow-on capital, and strategic syndicate partners.
Role Overview
As Managing Director, Investment Banking (Venture Capital Coverage), you will serve as the senior relationship lead to venture capital firms across early-stage and growth-stage financings.
You will be responsible for bringing established, portable, and currently active VC relationships that will engage in live mandates. This position is focused on VC access and partner-to-partner relationship activation rather than primary mandate origination or day-to-day deal execution.
Your core objective is to increase VC responsiveness, meeting volume, IOI participation, and term sheet activity across our capital raise pipeline by leveraging direct relationships with General Partners, Principals, and senior investment leads at venture capital firms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain active, partner-level relationships with seed funds, early-stage venture capital firms, growth equity funds, sector-specialist VCs, and corporate venture arms
- Leverage portable VC relationships to drive lead and follow-on participation in capital raises (Pre-Seed through Series C)
- Conduct partner-to-partner and senior-to-senior outreach to VC decision-makers (General Partners, Managing Directors, Principals) during active mandates
- Pre-sound priority VCs prior to formal launches to assess thesis fit, check size, valuation sensitivity, ownership requirements, board expectations, and structure preferences
- Increase VC meetings, indications of interest, term sheets, and lead investor commitments across transactions
- Facilitate direct introductions between Post Oak issuers and qualified venture capital firms
- Help construct competitive syndicates by identifying lead investors, co-investors, and strategic value-add partners
- Enhance competitive tension by driving partner-level engagement throughout transaction lifecycles
- Provide market intelligence on fund cycles, dry powder, sector appetite, stage focus, and valuation trends across the venture landscape
- Collaborate with internal execution teams to align VC targeting strategy with mandate-specific criteria, sector, and stage
- Maintain disciplined tracking of VC relationships, fund mandates, and engagement activity
Qualifications
- Must have established, portable, and currently active venture capital relationships that will engage in live transactions
- Existing partner-level connectivity across the seed, early-stage, and growth-stage VC communities, with demonstrable direct access to decision-makers (not associates or gatekeepers)
- Track record of converting VC relationships into completed financings, including lead and follow-on rounds
- Strong understanding of how VCs evaluate deals, including thesis fit, market sizing, ownership math, board dynamics, pro rata rights, and follow-on reserves
- Deep knowledge of early-stage through growth-stage capital raising dynamics (Pre-Seed through Series C)
- Working knowledge of venture-backed M&A processes and exit dynamics
- Demonstrated ability to generate warm engagement from General Partners and senior investment professionals
- Experience in venture capital, growth equity, investment banking, capital markets advisory, or founder-side capital raising
- Strong executive presence and credibility with founders, CEOs, and institutional investors
- Self-motivated and comfortable operating in a performance-driven environment
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with transaction teams
