We recently tuned into an incredible conversation with UCLA professor and author Safiya Noble, Ph.D. on Houston Public Media, where she reminded audiences of both the fallibility of our technologies and the possibility they hold if we ask the right questions. "We use these technologies thinking they’re democratic ... But at the same time that the companies are optimizing for maximum profit, they're telling us that these systems are neutral, that they're reliable information resources... Nothing could be further from the truth." At the same time, she offered a hopeful reimagining, where data can serve the public good when used with care and context: "Use different kinds of data to help inform whether we should be giving city resources just to policing or should we just diversify that spend to figure out where should we put more affordable housing, where should we look for to create jobs hubs, how can that reduce crime, too. It’s exciting to think about what data can do." We were reminded that our technologies, from search engines to AI systems, are not neutral tools. They are reflections of the societies that build them.
