It had been nearly 40 years since Stafford Fire Department (Kansas) bought a new truck due to budget constraints. 400 miles away, Windsor Heights Fire Department (Iowa) was looking to sell their 2007 American LaFrance Metropolitan Pumper 🚒🔥 We are proud to have connected these two departments to trade this essential apparatus, handling the virtual inspection, payment and freight. Corruption left the people of Utica without a functioning fire department. For over a year, the community was forced to wonder what emergency response would look like when they needed it most. On January 1st, 2026, Utica Fire & Rescue officially came back online. We started Garage with the mission of keeping taxpayer funds in the hands of America's towns and cities. Now, as volunteerism in the fire service declines, budgets tighten, and new apparatus costs skyrocket, it has never been more important for fire departments to recoup market value from their surplus assets. When South Farmingdale Fire Department came to Garage, they were frustrated. Historically they sold surplus assets via channels that required months of phone calls and manual paperwork, and left them with a fraction of market value. Within weeks of partnering with Garage, they sold three trucks– unlocking more than $200,000 of additional funds to reinvest into their community. Over a decade ago, I rode this truck to my first structure fire. It just sold on Garage for 5x more than my Chief thought it would go for. For fire departments like mine, these trucks aren’t just an expensive asset ($1M+ new) – they’re a fixture of the community. So when you say goodbye, there’s a comfort in knowing that it’s finding a new home where it can continue to serve. Before Garage, that truck would’ve sold locally for close to nothing, or even sold for parts. By listing on Garage, they reached departments nationwide, used AI appraisals to price it right, and leveraged seamless end-to-end freight coordination. The result: meaningful funds reinvested back into my hometown community, all while a department in North Carolina got the right truck at a price they could afford. When Elba Salem Fire Protection District (IL) went to sell their surplus apparatus on Facebook, they struggled to get traction.
