Utah women are motivated, capable, and ready to contribute at every level of our economy. But our newest statewide data shows something we cannot ignore: confidence in navigating Utah’s workforce pathways is slipping—not rising. Across 4,800+ Utahns, four indicators reveal a clear pattern: • Many women still don’t know how to access quality job pathways • Confidence in employability varies sharply by income, education, and geography • Hundreds of thousands of women are unsure they can maintain stable employment • And too many remain uncertain whether Utah’s labor market can meet their needs These findings matter. They tell us where women are thriving—and where structural barriers continue to hold them back. If we want Utah’s economy to grow, we must ensure women can fully participate in it. I break down the data and what it means for leaders, employers, and policymakers in my newest LinkedIn article. • Curious why Utah has such a strong culture of women entrepreneurs? Our latest research explores the factors shaping women’s entrepreneurial experiences in Utah, including why many choose entrepreneurship and the barriers they still face. From funding gaps and limited access to mentorship to legitimacy challenges and childcare, these findings offer a deeper look at the realities shaping women’s entrepreneurship across the state. Read the full article to learn more.

For today's weekly LinkedIn article, I'm focusing on the qualitative responses related to women and entrepreneurship in Utah. While quantitative data helps us understand broad patterns in women’s entrepreneurial interest, confidence, and perceived support, qualitative insights reveal the lived experiences behind the numbers. In our 2025 statewide survey conducted by the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP), more than 3,800 Utahns responded to open‑ended questions about the challenges and opportunities facing women and girls. Of these, 274 participants specifically mentioned themes related to entrepreneurship. Their comments provide a deeper look at how Utah women perceive the entrepreneurial landscape—what motivates them, what resources they see as available, and what barriers still stand in the way. If you are interested in entrepreneurship, you'll appreciate this brief summary of the findings. We appreciate our advisors and partners in our A Bolder Way Forward spoke on this very topic: https://lnkd.in/gXX8swk6 Utah State University Extension

  • New Episode!! In this episode, we discuss two elements of a recently released white paper titled “Women, Finance, & Education 2025 Utahns’ Awareness, Understanding, and Attitudes.” The two we’ll be talking about today will be Higher Education Attainment and K-12 Initiatives. Based on an 83-item survey conducted in October and November of 2025, this study collected data from more than 5,200 Utahns across both representative and convenience samples. This marks the third consecutive year of data collection, allowing us to examine how perceptions and experiences have shifted since the 2023 and 2024 surveys. This episode discusses key findings from Higher Education Attainment and K-12 Initiatives to better understand the challenges, trends, and opportunities shaping the lives of Utah women and girls today. Dr. Susan R. Madsen, an Extension Professor of Leadership at Utah State University and the Founding Director of the UWLP and A Bolder Way Forward, is joined by two guests. First, Eric Dahlin, professor in the Department of Sociology at BYU and a Bolder Way Forward advisor for the Higher Education Attainment spoke. Also joining us is Mindy L. Layton, Ed.D., a fourth-generation Utah educator who currently serves as a Multilingual Learner Academic Coach at Granite School District.
