Building the first power grid in space
About us
We're building the first power grid in space. The Star Catcher Network wirelessly transmits concentrated solar energy via optical power beaming directly to satellites' existing solar arrays — no retrofit required. By enabling up to 10x more power generation than onboard systems alone, we’re ending power scarcity in orbit and enabling the space industrial revolution.

Catch Andrew Rush on Via Satellite’s On Orbit podcast with Rachel Jewett talking about Star Catcher’s orbital energy grid and how we’re powering a new era of resilient, persistent, and scalable space operations. 🛰️⚡️
“We need a power grid in space that is mobile and adaptable to be able to provide satellites power when they need it — to supercharge them, to extend the lifetime, to break that power budget, and provide power abundance.” Andrew Rush joined the On Orbit podcast this week to talk about how Star Catcher wants to break the power constraints in space by deploying satellites that can function as a power grid in orbit. Space is no longer a distant frontier – it has become an essential infrastructure layer for the modern economy and an increasingly strategic operating environment. As activity in space scales, reliable and flexible access to power is essential to both commercial leadership and national security. At a time when the world is more dependent than ever on space for communications, intelligence, and security, Star Catcher is positioned to provide the missing piece: the first power grid for space. Its platform will deliver on-demand power to satellites using existing solar arrays, unlocking capabilities that current architectures cannot reliably support today. Just as on land, whoever controls the ability to power space will control the domain. We’re excited to back Star Catcher in its Series A alongside B Capital and Shield Capital as the company works to build critical infrastructure for the next era of space. Sarah Istel explains why Star Catcher is tackling one of the most important infrastructure constraints today: https://lnkd.in/e3Au2-Du

Beaming a huge thank you to NYSE for having our CEO Andrew Rush on the opening bell show yesterday morning to discuss our $65 million Series A — why it matters, what it enables, and how Star Catcher's power grid in space will enable us to build in orbit at the scale the next century of life on Earth will demand. Our team is no stranger to this floor. Andrew Rush, Michael Snyder, and Nathan O'Konek took Redwire public on the NYSE in 2021. And just last week, John Serafini, a Partner at Series A co-lead Shield Capital, took HawkEye 360 public right here too. Grateful to have this depth of experience building scalable space technologies and companies on our team!

At Shield Capital we are proud of the Space Portfolio we have assembled. A few weeks ago Starfish Space announced new rounds of financing following excellent performance. Starfish is leading the rendezvous proximity operations and docking (R-POD) pack. Last week HawkEye 360 IPO'd in fashion showcasing strong, growing financials and performance in the 'space meets national security' market specific to Radio Frequency detection. Albedo continues to prove the impossible as a market leader in #VLEO. And Apex - Satellite Platforms has reimagining and accelerated how satellite vehicles ought to be procured. Yesterday, we added our to portfolio with another category leader, Star Catcher, who announced their oversubscribed $65 million Series A raise. Over the past year I have been so impressed with Andrew Rush, Michael Snyder, and Bryan Lyandvert who are developing the next layer of space infrastructure critical to unlocking new applications in space. The thesis is simple: - One can never have enough power🔋 - Shifting CAPEX to OPEX makes financing space missions easier💸. - Unique National Security application 🇺🇸 . But really, we're in the business of investing in great founding teams and when it comes to Space, experience is king. This team has all the right ingredients! Please see this blog post from me and my teammates John Serafini and Matt Kaplan on why we're so excited to be co-lead investors alongside B Capital and Cerberus Capital Management. I am truly honored to be joining the board alongside Jeff Johnson and Gen (ret) John W. Jay Raymond, the first Chief of Space Operations. https://lnkd.in/ecdbyrbR #missionmatters

Today, Star Catcher announced their $65 million Series A with B Capital leading the round, and I'm pleased to share I'll be joining the board. Star Catcher is building the first power grid in space. The same forces reshaping energy infrastructure on Earth are now playing out in orbit. Exploding demand, limited shared infrastructure and a widening gap between what the market needs and what currently exists. Every satellite in orbit today is power-limited. Connectivity, computing, sensing and security are all constrained by the same ceiling. When B Capital first backed Star Catcher at seed, my colleagues Howard Morgan and Patrick Harmon Lopez believed Andrew Rush and the team had what it takes to execute on a genuinely hard problem. Two years in, that belief is well supported. In less than two years, the team set the world record for optical power beaming, completed a critical on-orbit subsystem demonstration and validated their end-to-end system architecture. Seven power purchase agreements, multiple government contracts and a qualified pipeline representing more than $3 billion in projected annual recurring revenue. Star Catcher is designed to deliver up to 10x more power to existing spacecraft with no retrofit required. The value of an electron is increasing every day. That is as true in orbit as it is on Earth. I'm proud to partner with Andrew, the entire Star Catcher team and a fantastic investor syndicate as they build the infrastructure the next century of space operations will require.
